Windows 8.1 Boot Problems... And More.

Hey all, I have a real headache of a problem happening. I can't seem to figure it out and I can't afford to take my computer to the repairman. So, I'm stuck.

Back in November, my computer (which I built back in 2010) crashed, and it took my C: Drive with it. Ever since then, it would not run stable, no matter what I seemed to do. 8.1 has rather vague Blue Screen Error Messages, and so I was kind of stuck in that rut, seeing as I could not seem to replicate the issue. The only fishy thing I found was that it seemed to only crash when it was idling. That seems a little backwards in my eyes, so I rebuilt (most of) it.

Currently, I have the following set up:
-Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VI Hero LGA 1150
-CPU: Intel Core i7-4470K @ 3.5 GHz
-RAM: 16GB (4 x 4GB) G.SKILL Ripjaws X @ 1866 (Model F3-14900CL9Q-16GBXL)
-Hard Drive: 2TB Seagate Drive (for Back Up Purposes only)*
-SSD 1 & 2: Kingston SV300S37A 120GB
-SSD 3: Samsung MZ-7PC256B/WW 256GB*
-SSD 4: Crucial M4 CT064M4SSD2 64GB*
-Power Supply: Raidmax 1050 Watt*
-Video Cards: EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Superclocked with 2 GB GDDR5 (Model 02G-P3-1469-KR)*
-Case: Cooler Master HAF XM with Windowed Side Panel*
-WiFi Card: ASUS PCE-AC66*
-Plus a custom water cooling loop for the CPU*
-And A CD Drive that I inherited and know nothing about*

Continuing on, all the items listed above with stars are things that I kept from my prior build. They were things that I didn't think would cause the problems I had been having with my old build. The build went great, no problems at all. Things went wrong when I got 8.1 installed. I am finding multiple problems:

First, I am not used to the GUI of BIOS and all the new options it has on there. I only changed the things that I knew about and felt needed changing, so that could be why I'm having the issues I'm having. A more minor issue though, that could be causing the other issues.

Second, my graphics seem to be very glitchy. I do not believe they are my screens, because they are the only things that seemed to have survived through the years. Why is beyond me. Basically, when I go from the start "menu," back to desktop mode and continue doing whatever it was I was doing (i.e. browsing Chrome, Photoshopping), it takes a minute for the full screen to be shown, and even then, black boxes still appear in parts of the screen that can only be removed if I mouse over them.

Lastly, and the biggest head ache of all, is the fact that my computer is so dang fast, but only when I can get it booted. For some, unknown reason, it is doing this thing where it will boot very selectively. It will get to the very first thing that 8.1 shows in the booting sequence: A black screen with the blue flags, and dots that move around in a circle, and then the dots will stop moving and it just freezes. I have let it sit for 5 hours before, it didn't crash, boot or anything. It just sat there in it's frozen state. It will do this 8 out of every 10 times I attempt booting. No error messages, no nothing. On some occasions, if I push the reset button on my tower, and let it reboot, POST, etc., it will boot fine. Other times (this happens more often than not), it starts the Windows troubleshooting thing and will only boot if I do a system restore. It has blue screened 3 times now, one of which it wiped my C: Drive. The error passes quickly but it was something about WHEA... I don't remember the rest. Another time, it was because of an "Inaccessible_Boot_Device" but was fixed after a reinstall.

I have no reason to believe that it is hardware related. Most of my hardware is 8 certified. The only things I really thought were the culprits were my Power Supply, which I did test and came out fine. I also considered my 64 GB SSD, but even when it isn't even plugged in, I still have this issue. All the drivers for all devices are installed properly as well.

I am so frustrated that my computer won't just work properly and that I haven't had a working machine since November now, and even after doing a rebuild, it still refuses to work as it should. Any advice or things to look at would be much appreciated.

Thanks in Advance,

Solution

The safest way is to reset to defaults. Use the CMOS button or remove the RTC battery (CMOS battery) and leave it out for 10 minutes and then insert it back again. Now restart.

A debug CD will help identify the problems if you still have any.

Very surprisingly, after activating it over the telephone, yes I was able to activate 8.1.

I can get it to POST, and I can get it to BIOS. The problem occurs when I try to get to Windows. I did look through the guide you posted and I've built many computers for myself and friends and these were some of the very first things that I checked. Do you have any other tips? I'm really thinking that it's something in BIOS or some incompatibility but I'm no software junkie so I wouldn't know.
