I have no idea why you got downrated. What you're saying is true... drivers are ultimately the responsibility of the vendors. Anyway, most of the issues I've seen with wireless on any system were either poor drivers or router compatibility issues. If it's an issue with the router a lot of times you can correct it with an updated firmware that plays nice with new hardware/software. I've had to update firmware on numerous routers over the years to correct all sorts of issues from vulnerabilities to performance and connectivity issues.

I don't know why people even bother hiding their SSIDs anymore. It's not like it actually protects you... anyone who knows what they're doing is going to see you. In a way it has the opposite effect, making you stand out more to those who were looking.

I just hope everyone has a good router that lets you turn off WPS and really and truly disables it. WPS is a huge vulnerability, and is completely unnecessary to boot - if you don't know how to connect to a wireless network, I don't think WPS is the right answer.

Love how people always blame the OS.

It's a driver problem. Every version of every OS has issues with hardware when the proper drivers aren't installed.

The big issue it seems is that whatever chipset model is having these connection issues obviously has the incorrect driver loading in.

Find out what your chipset model is, and then start downloading every version of it you can find from the Manufacturer. After that, it's good old trial and error.

As for Microsoft and their Windows platform, you have mainly the vendors to blame for this. If you wanted hardware that worked every time, then go spend you money on an Apple and pay the premium for their scrutiny on what is and isn't allowed.

my computer is connected with a cable and I think the driver is gone bad - re installed it but again it shows Limited or No Connectivity

My friend had the same problem connecting to his Wi-Fi. We solved this problem by restoring his laptop to an earlier date when the Wi-Fi worked. His computer is working fine now and the windows 8.1 is still installed.

I don't have this problem so it must not exist. I kid.
I don't have this issue, but I remember I used to have connectivity issues with my old router and Windows 7. The problem was first noticed when a WII and an Apple device were connected. I solved the issue by disabling IPv6 on all devices whether wired or wireless Microsoft or not.

In my new location and setup with a different router I've had multiple brands of devices albeit none with Windows 8 connected without any issue regardless of IPv6 enabled or disabled.

i cant believe after more than a year that win 8 was relased, almost every month a new windows 8 issue is reported, and what is best, i have another issue to add to the list which seems to be happening some time ago: (dont know if it was already noted, but since it still happening even with latest windows update patches installed, i guess Ms hasnt been able to fix it:

if you want to gain maximum fps on games, you' ll need to have google chrome opened while your game runs, weird, otherwise, you´ll get noticiable lower fps performance (tested with crysis 3 and tombraider), and seems many people have thats issue, searching over the internet there are many people on forums talking about that.

from my personal experience this issue only occurs on windows 8.1, i tested on a gtx 770 i7 920 6gb system, with both windows 7 and windows 8.1 with latest updates and drivers installed, and windows 7 64bit works perfectly achiving maximum frames regardless chorme is opened or not.

You know what that sounds like? OK... get ready for it... a driver issue. 😛 The drivers for 8.1 aren't very mature. I'd get on the forums for the GPU vendor and discuss it there.

Had the same problem on a MSI GE60 20D with AzureWave WLAN. I think the MS-supplied driver is crap.

The connection would only last a few minutes, then I had to restart the laptop (restarting the device/driver did not help, IIRC).

Force-installing the manufacturer's driver solved the problem, I believe.

I have seen this issue happen many of times in the case of wired or wireless networking adapters where the person or automatic updates have been turned on and installed the windows / microsoft drivers. Always, ALWAYS use the manufacturer supplied drivers for your wired or wireless device. Never use hardware driver updates from automatic updates. They are usually located in the other section anyway and usually have to be selected. Always use drivers from the original manufacturer never trust drivers from Microsoft. You wouldn't use the default drivers for your video card would you? No you would download the drivers from Nvidia, ATI, or Intel. Do the same for all your other devices as well.

Hi,
I have been struggling for some time with the Qualcom Atheros Wifi Adapter AR 5BWB222 in an Acer V5 touchscreen laptop after updating to Windows 8.1.

I have read so many suggestions and tried many different things but nothing worked.

I then downloaded the driver version 10.0.0.263 from here:
http://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-download.php?chipset=74&system=8

and that solved the problem.

I know it is not an official site by the manufacturer but this driver solved the issue.

Maybe you give it a try.

Happy New Year !

And thanks to everybody for contributing to solve this issue.

My problem is that wifi-card goes unknown state every time 8.1 makes updates. Latest drivers and all. But the main problem to the wifi isn't with wifi-card, but PCI-bridge that somehow use wrong driver. I used DriverMax to identify the problem, and found correct drivers for PCI-bridge. Now, everytime 8.1 makes updates, after reboot, I have to reinstall that driver.

The biggest problem with my Microsoft Tech support and why I think they are all idiots is first, they never admit faults or bugs in the operating system. Instead they are as good as the help client that comes with windows. Microsoft has the worst technical support in the world.

i have a acer aspire , i updated to windows 8.1 and then changed to AT&T wifi wireless, so far ok, the trouble i'm having is the bluetooth won't work.

i read a post saying that the problem is actually CISCO's and suggest to download driver for Win7 which will not attempt to trigger the faulty firmware, can anyone confirm this?http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/acb4b6f4-0808-4534-b31a-75fd5c075f76/secure-wifi-connection-issues
