Hi. I sure hope you can help me. I built a PC with an ASUS z87 motherboard.
First step of going in to BIOS worked fine. Boot drive priority set to CD, then primary drive.

Next step of installing Windows 8.1 64-bit did not go so well. Started fine with copying the files and then suddenly when I checked on it again it said that "the computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an error. Windows installation cannot proceed." It then said to click ok to restart and continue installation

When I restart the computer, via the ok button or the soft reset button, the windows logo shows up and then pops up the same message. I took out the CD and it still does the same thing.

So two issues arise in my mind. First was it an error or did the computer really shtut down unexpectedly.

And second, why won't restarting work, in terms of getting me out of that error window cycle?

THANKS!!

Solution
Formatting the drive is done during the install of Windows 8 I would suggest that you go into the Bios and load default settings. Then go and change the drive type to AHCI, boot from the install DVD and hopefully it fixes the issue.
I would suggest booting into the BIOS and watching the temps of the CPU for a little bit. Maybe it overheated during the install. If everything is ok after a 5 min watch, I'd say boot off the Windows DVD, format the drive again, and start over.

USAFRet: Thank you. I shut down the computer and booted from the install disk. It just opened up to the same error message, and did not start over with the install (picked up where it left off, it seems).

Freakboi_pa: Thanks, I did that and my temps are around 93 F. However, I never formated the drive in BIOS. Was I supposed to do this? Windows never got far enough into the install to say anything about drives.

Look forward to more great ideas.

I noticed another interesting thing when I went back into BIOS. The DVD shows up twice now. once as it's actual name and once with a UEFI label on it. So the boot order now shows as DVd -> HDD -> DVD with UEFI label.

Thanks. will try that. may I ask where do I change the drive type to ahci?

Can I ask which motherboard you were using? I have an Asus impact z87 motherboard and am having the same issues? It has the m-pci combo card for the wireless and Bluetooth.
Thanks.
