Windows 8.1 is extremely slow

My Windows 8.1 is very slow to open files, right-click and load the desktop. I have a pretty good system so I am quite surprised that I am faced with this issue. I don't have the same problem on a much weaker system (right-click is almost instantaneous, as is the opening of files such as pictures and videos)

Sometimes, when right-clicking files/ folders it takes over 8-9 seconds for the pop up to load. The same occurs when I try to open files.

I have:

- Intel 4770k CPU
- 8GB RAM
- GTX 670 4GB Graphics Card
- Operating system is on a Samsung 256GG SSD.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Are your drives ok? This sounds to me like hard drive (or SSD) issues... The files and folders that are slow to open, are they on the SSD or another hard drive? Have you run the likes of Disk Check, or Samsung Magician? What are they saying about the heath of the SSD? How full is the SSD? And what antivirus software are you running? Is there anything else running in the background? A barrage of questions I know, but all worth considering...

Hello, thank you so much for your post!

My drives seem fine - SSD Magician and Crystal Disk Info both say so. The problem occurs regardless of where the files are - on the SSD, on second drive or on a network drive. Disk Check also showed no issues.

There is still over 120GB left on the SSD so it cannot be that, can it? In the background there isn't much - just Chrome, Dropbox, ASUS's AI Suite 3, Plex and Avast.

Also, there is never high memory nor cpu usage when this occurs. I have tried closing as my programs as possible to see if it still occurs and it does.

I hope this helps 😀

Hello, I have the 840 series. SSD Magician says that I am on the latest firmware version already. :)

Is that the Samsung 840 EVO? This is the drive with the problem. For some reason the firmware update that fixes it doesn't (yet) show up in Magician - go directly to Samsung for it

It is not an Evo, it is a normal one. Should I still try to find the update on the Samsung website?

I think the software is for Evo drives only. I downloaded it and it did not detect my drive. What else could be causing this issue?

It is for the EVO only. The EVO is made up of a different configuration of chips from the straight 840 drives

Time to consider some of those other things I suggested...? Btw also try unpluggin all external devices bar mouse, keyboard, monitor incase some kind of device driver conflict is the problem

Its an SSD, you do not need to defrag SSDs, and you should not defrag SSDs.

Sorry, you might wanna clarify that comment, I THINK I know what you meant....

Third time of writing it as well
