Actually running 8.1 update 1 on some E8400 Core2 Duo, Are you talking about the older Core 2 chips?

Planning a little test on a Pentium D H/T Point of Sale. it has 64bit instruction set capability, don't see why the 64 bit version won't work, but if not, 32bit surely will.

I've used 8.1 for about 10 minutes and deduced it's pointless. All it does is add the start button which allows you to switch between your desktop and METRO, adds a search and power option next to your username in METRO and gives you a hidden taskbar...in METRO, which you have to show by moving your pointer to the bottom of the screen. All the additions it has made have been for the purpose of extending the life of METRO which in essence, is a second desktop. They have two options here: Get rid of the classic desktop and make Metro the default...AND make it usable with a mouse and keyboard (shortcuts and all) or incorporate Metro-esque features in the classic desktop and get rid of Metro. It all hinges on how disjointed they want their OS to feel.

Not happy with 8.1 at all, and I have a feeling I can attribute this towards AMD not having great support for it, but still, I would like it if my display driver didn't crash every so often

After reading this article I went to the Microsoft Windows web site and read everything I could find about the Windows 8.1 update. Nowhere did I find anything that stated that this update had to be installed by May 13th. According to the Microsoft Windows 8.1 site, installation of the update will be required in order to continue to receive future updates, but that is typical of common 'patches' designed to fix update abilities.

Yeah, I screwed up the "quote" in the reply of Omars statement. The paragraph below is what I had mentioned. My netbook at home using a single core atom was running Window beta 8 perfectly fine (better than 7, pretty much equal to XP) outside the "metro" interface strictly due to the screen resolution not being high enough. Windows 8 system requirements are quite low. Only reasons why I switched it to linux was the resolution issue and the fact that I have a desktop running Windows 8 already.

You guys complain that Win8 doesn`t run on certain core 2 duo CPUs.. or runs ... My problem with Intel and their support, when i encountered Win8 HDMI problems due to their drivers on Core I3 first gen CPUs... telling me that i should buy a newer laptop for it, i eventually found a workaround the problem , was due to aspect ration in the TV settings on Intel`s control panel, funny is that their support guy blamed at some point Nvidia (i have an nvidia GT540 GPU also ) for my HDMI problems :) And my desktop runs smooth on Win 8.1 update 1
