Windows 8 cannot connect to internet

I can connect with another computer(windows xp), so I think the router/modem are ok. In "ethernet status" i can see the number of bytes sent and received, and that's constantly changing. But no internet connection. perhaps something in the computer is blocking the connection? I have tried manually inputing the ip address and dns info, but no luck there. thanks for any input you might have.
