Yeah but you do know that'll be hibernate vs shut down by default?

[citation][nom]clonazepam[/nom]I hadn't seen this Fritz benchmark before. I just tried version 4.2. I'm using an i7-2600k at 4.6ghz, with 16GB RAM at 1866. Let's just say my results are less than half of what you got on the i7-3770k so I think I'm missing something. Maybe I have too much overhead in processes, etc, or something...Edit: I closed about 40 processes, funny Chrome had 12 processes running taking over 2GB memory in total. Still, I managed to only get a score of 6006 lol...[/citation]
Somethink's wrong, i get 7000+ with a Core 2 Quad Q8400 😀

what is up with the outdate programs? you need to test win rar 4.2 like said above and you should test audio transcoding performance in itunes. also 12.10 has been out since the 22nd and it offers improvements to windows 8.

That`s just to show you how relevant are all the "mark" applications, in fact i don`t get it why sites even use them. I don`t care how my PC does in 3Dmark / sysmark / alsplsmark w/e mark program, i care how my PC does in real applications. When i read a performance review i always jump the pages refering to synthetic benchmarks since they are irrelevant, i didn`t bought a PC to run those.

Man, am I embarrassed. Well kinda. I'll get to that in a minute.

Thank you for your response, first and foremost. I wouldn't have tried so hard to find the reason w/o your input. It was either of combination of Asus EPU and/or Intel SpeedStep. I'm betting its just the Asus EPU software because I left 'max energy savings' selected when I was playing around with benchmarks and checking the # of watts from the wall.

Asus EPU had my CPU running permanently at 1600Mhz, thanks to that one setting. So the 6006 score is 8 cores at 1.6Ghz. So the re-run of Fritz Chess Benchmark at full speed (4.6Ghz) gave me a score of 16286.

I've been playing games like Borderlands 2, Dishonored, BF3, MW3, Alan Wake, 007 Legends, Skyrim (HD), and Batman Arkhum City and never even noticed lol...

Lastly, sorry to readers for this off-topic help me convo ;-)

Fritz is usually consistent though. So as an arbitrary score, it kind of works well.

Lol my core 2 quad is only a bit better than an octa-threaded i7 @1.6 GHz...just goes to show how badly i need an upgrade 😀

I like synthetics. Not everyone will have the same games for comparison, but at least the synthetics have a freeware version so you can gauge your performance. As you may have read, comparing my performance in a synthetic benchmark vs. the system(s) in the article, was instrumental in my troubleshooting of an obvious loss of horsepower.

I came up from a C2Q 6600 last summer. I bought it for $300 in 2007. Four years later, I bought the i7 for $315 so I was quite pleased and tired of waiting for Bulldozer to see how it'd turn out.

As for the article, I'm going to play with Windows Server 2012 and see if I can't have the best of two worlds, maybe even eek out a lil more bang bang.

i bought W8 because it was £24. I was expecting Vista 2.0 but you know what I'm actually liking it. Yes the UI is a bit weird at first but im getting used it.

Ive actually gone as far as removing windows 7 from my HTPC, for one simple reason. those tiles are a lot easier than scrolling through a tool bar on an HDTV. Looking forward to the next release of steam...big pictures and tiles. Might have to stick a decent GPU in my HTPC.

I'll shift to Haswell next year. Whether it'll be an i5 or i7 is unclear...i doubt the i7 will really get much to do on my machine...unless i start AutoCAD/Blender properly...or Star Citizen takes advantage of 8 threads 😉

Would be nice if you threw in OSX and Linux with programs that work across those platforms: Scribus, blender, openoffice, gimp. I would like to see a Win7/Win8/OSX/Linux comparison.

Good to see you resolved it, but it's hilarious you played all those games and never noticed. That tells you something about CPU requirements these days....

No massive effect, but the increases to perceived speed and boot-up times are more than worth the upgrade as long as you realize that some older games and newer games will need updates due to incompatibilities with various things in Windows 8.

it will not install on a a amd x495 cpu with 16 gigs of memory and a ati 5760 1gig video and a 1.5 tb hard drive so what a load of crap

7-Zip 0.91 Beta ?!?!?! LOLWUT...

latest alpha version is 9.30 (2012-10-26)
latest beta version is 9.22 (2011-04-18)
latest stable version is 9.20 (2010-11-18)

[citation][nom]RazorBurn[/nom]The Two features of windows 8 that persuaded me to upgrade are 1. Storage Spaces2. Data Deduplicationjeffwouters.nl/index.php/2012/01/disk-deduplication-in-windows-8-explained-from-a-to-z/http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab [...] -2012.aspxHope tom's will have a in depth look at Data Deduplication..[/citation]

WE ALSO FOUND STORAGE SPACES A BUY IT FEATURE.
sad they pulled it from Win 7 but we use two way mirrors a lot here.

Please compare windows server 2012 as well. You'll need to install the Wireless feature and enable the windows audio service, then it's like windows 8, http://www.szwipes.com but with desktop as default ui
maybe consider desktop experience feature too if those things are needed

win 8 sucks i wouldnt touch it with a ten foot pole it looks like a phone os ,maybe win 9 would be better but all in all windoze sucks

To me , windows 8 is more "makeup" than win 7 system, like vista was in comparison. In essentially they are the same! I think that the only "win 9" will have stronger graphics performance than win 8 and it's going to happen later this year.
