Recently my audio stopped working completely. I uninstalled the drivers and decided to reinstall. I got the Realtek HD Audio Drivers for windows 8 and that's when it all went downhill. My audio suddenly lost all bass and sounds horrible. It had pretty solid bass before, but now it is torture for my ears and I hate it, especially with games. I do however have bass when I plug in a subwoofer to the optical, but all of my headphones get nothing. I know its not an issue with my headphones because they are all high quality $70-100 headphones and get huge bass on my phone. How do I fix this?

Sounds like realtek set your audio flat. Hence bass on sub, but lack in headphones. Try adjusting the equalizer, but never increase more the a couple DB or prepare for massive distortion..

Hello. You're not alone. Me and my girldriend have the same problem. No bass, flat sound, realtek falsely recognizing headphones as speakers and nothing works. This happened after updating the system by official windows updates. Well, we found no solution yet, but I think the problem is in software.

Keep eye on this topic - http://www.pchelpforum.com/windows-8-a/124082-pc-went-crazy-about-audio-3-5mm-ports.html#post993302
where i described the problem and things I found since now.

Good luck and please reply there if you find a solution.
PS: the sound should be good when you pull sound balance to the very left or very right side, but you will have no stereo sound.

I used Realtek HD drivers too, but long before this happened. This problem came up 20th of April for my GF and 24th of april for me, different houses.

My computer ended up crashing after installing the latest nvidia drivers. This has happened to me before. My advice, if it aint broke don't fix it. Do not update the nvidia graphics drivers if you are running fine. I have gotten a BSOD twice from it and I learned my lesson. Off topic, anyways, I reinstalled windows 8 and now my sound is fixed so... It came with a price since I lost everything, but that's why I have a dropbox account. It was well worth it to have normal, non-excruciating sound.

Just general advice for sound problems - use free Slimdrivers for driver updates it finds for your model if you can't get what you need from the models website, and choose upgrade on your windows disc to do a "repair" install (it's not a reinstall so it keeps all documents and programmes intact). Or at least try the Microsoft fixit toolkit and run the sound and codec fixes.

Dear skullcrusher956, this is solution: Go to: control panel -> hardware and sound -> sound -> tap 'speakers -> properties -> advanced -> turn 'enable audio enhancements' off. This should fix the flat sound problem.

Hi, I tried to manage to get a good sound. My solution was only a bit different:

Go to: control panel -> hardware and sound -> sound -> tap 'speakers' -> properties -> enhancements -> disable all sound effects

Solved it for me.

The same problem after upgrading to Win 10. This solutions solved it for me too ! :)

OMG you guys are awesome!!

I live in Canada, and before the recent update which brought Cortana to my country, I used the generic audio driver from Windows which worked for me. Since this update that has muted my speakers or headphones.

I guess my IDT audio drivers are just too old and the audio enhancements just don't work with Windows 10.

Thank you!!
