[citation][nom]AndrewMD[/nom]Good luck with that.... I run Ubuntu, MacOS, and Windows because I need to be able to support all of these platforms... You just switching to Linux is just the same knee jerk reaction Balwin had when before Obama was elected... wasn't he suppose to leave the country... yeah.. like I said, good luck...[/citation]

I switched over to Ubuntu about two years ago. Unless the person has some specific software need, he'd probably be fine.

As for me... I paid $100 for a significantly-neutered Windows 7. I think the pricing is becoming a little excessive compared to the value offered. I'm hoping I can hang with 7 for a long while.

Can't wait for my copy of WIN8, probly going to buy 4-5 copies. I get the same performance gaming with 8 as with 7 so why wouldn't I buy this instead of paying $120 for WIN7?

Don't like METRO??? DONT USE IT! Use the desktop its there...

My Vista BASIC copy cost me $299 when it came out then it would not even run on my PC for 6 months until proper drivers came out. FAIL. Slow game performance. FAIL

Win 8 runs all my devices plays all my games and will cost half the price of 7.

This from some one who paid $300 for Vista!

Your FAIL was paying $300 (I guess you are not in the USA?).

[citation][nom]bloody_el[/nom]Gaming should theoretically be better because of Windows 8 using less resources than Windows 7. There is plenty of good in this OS.[/citation] And what games would THAT BE? Show me any statics that show an AA PC game FPS between the two OSes.

Theres plenty of bad in windows r8pe to make it useless.

There is also plenty of good in Windows 8. Boot times, touch, overall performance, usb 3 transfer speeds, many cpu intensive tasks. Gaming should be better but in almost all cases it is about the exact same. I would argue in favor in Windows 8, but there isn't a clear winner. I only say Windows 8 because it uses less resources than Windows 7.

The only bad thing I can say in Windows 8 is doing administrator tasks and going to the control panel. It isn't in the start menu, so you can't click, click to get there. It is easier to just "Windows Key" then type in the program. Search is faster in Windows 8, so I would call it just as good. That being said I wish I didn't have to travel to a different world to search, just to wind up back in desktop.

Yes, I'll go Win 8-32 on my old Lenovo XP tablet (have the RP on it now and it runs just fine thanks) and Win 8-64 on one of the desktops (the multimedia one, RP-64 is sweet on that)
The Gaming/Hi Perf box will stay on Win 7-64 for now, its scheduled for replacement anyway.
The Corp notebook, well, it has to stay Win 7-32 unfortunately, we don't have plans for getting a win 8 image prepped anytime soon.

In other words, not really much different than upgrading to Win 7, Vista, or XP when they came out.

Tempted to buy the $40 upgrade now, but still plan to stick with 7 as there's no real need to switch just yet.

Yes I will be scoring Win 8 licenses for all my machines. I can upgrade my 3 desktops and my 2 laptops for the cost of what one license would be after February next year. That is to good to resist.

XBMC on any os is better for multimedia then W8 ever will be.

I am staying on w7, metro is just ugly and useless and I never had to use Win key and wont start with it now. Actually that could be even problem when using some older mechanical keyboard or running it under virtualization.

If you press the Windows Key while in a vm, it should send that signal to the virtual machine. It has on all the Virtual Machines I've run as well as Remote Desktop Sessions. Shouldn't be an issue.

I'll upgrade my daughter's hand-me-down since it's running vista 32 and there is no trim support. Plus, at 10, she might actually like the live tiles. Though, I will be taking advantage of the $40 upgrade price

I will switch from windows 7 64x when I am forced to. I have 64gb of ram in my current rig and nothing in win 8 makes me want to switch.

I will. On average I am getting 2-5% improvement in fps on games. Not a huge deal though, would never have noticed except for the counter that tells me it is true.

Except you cant turn off metro.... You have to use it. Cant boot do the desktop(removed the ability to do that from the os), cant turn back on the start menu(removed the ability to do that).

There is not a chance i would use windows 8, its got a lot of really stupid design choices in it. Mabye it wouldnt suck on a tablet or a phone, i dont know i dont like tablets, and android phones work just fine....

But, for a desktop, metro is crap.

How old is the general population of Tom's Hardware? Some of these comments, I'm telling ya...

Regardless, I'd be interested in purchasing it and making a few after market customizations. You know they'll show up and some already exist. I use Windows 7 and it's a great OS but I also like tinkering with new things. I read reviews like everyone else but they only tell you so much, and with the way the tech crowd is leaning with this militant devotion and self-entitlement crap, I'd advise ignoring most reviews for now and going off what your gut is telling you.

I've tried the Beta version of Windows 8. Just NOT what I'm looking for in an OS GUI. Price doesn't matter, I DON'T WANT IT!

[citation][nom]caedenv[/nom]I will. On average I am getting 2-5% improvement in fps on games. Not a huge deal though, would never have noticed except for the counter that tells me it is true.[/citation] Then it doesn't count and the difference of 2% can be thrown out as a fluke.

As shown on a website with some games (not a great test by all means) Windows7 was 0~2fps faster usually. So if a typical game gets you 100fps (but we are actually limited to 60fps for our LCDs), you're only going to see a 2~5fps difference that wouldn't be seen on the display.

With Win 8 phones, Win 8 tablets and Win 8 desktops, all running full MS Outlook, soon available to the world of business, MS's 'real" agenda becomes more apparent.

Microsoft has ALWAYS been about business and their current strategy proves it. The ability to finally synch Outlook's email, contacts and journal across a compatible Microsoft platform without needing servers (Exchange or otherwise), cloud services and/or flaky 3rd party code snippets has me salivating. With Win 8 phones, quad-core Win 8 Pro 10.1 tablets and Win 8 for the desktop, I'm pumped!

I don't game or stream video; I do business and, like many, many others, I need a solid business-oriented platform to do business on. Win 8 should provide that.

Microsoft yesterday opened up registration for the Windows 8 downgrade program that will allow anyone purchasing a Windows 7 machine between June 2nd, 2012 and January 31st, 2013 to downgrade to Windows 8 for just $15 and a massive pain in their eyes.

there fixed it for you guys !

but seriously jokes aside , i'm sick of seeing windows 8 it's ugly , and worthless, looks too much like the ugly a-- xbox 360 dashboard changes they made a year and a half ago. i have no interest for it what so ever. i will continue to use win7 until third parties stop writing programs for it.

I'll be shocked if anybody at all adopts windows 8 at any price. I tried the developer preview, the consumer preview, and the release candidate. To my annoyance Microsoft didn't do shit to address any of the concerns i sent them about the interface so they won't see a dime from me. As far as I'm concerned Windows 8 is shite.

I'll save my money on Windows 8. For me Windows 7 has what I need and until I am forced to use it when I buy a PC. I certainly don't plan on installing it on what I have now. You could give it away Microsoft and I still don't want it.

[citation][nom]rolli59[/nom]$40 upgrade from XP or Vista not bad, no need to upgrade from 7 yet.[/citation]

Bingo. I wish there was a family pack option so I could upgrade my xp, vista and win7 starter machines. Heh, it's sad that I have no desire to upgrade the xp or win7 starter, but vista is going bye bye.
