Anyone know if they ditched the kernel in win9? I so hope they get rid of a billion lines of junk and get back to a true OS.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. To have one UI for the phone and the PC. Though who has time to learn this new UI? It eats up time that so many folk just don't have. The office politics and time with the family. Now this? I have been using windows 8 for months and I still don't know everything about it. Sure it is easier to use now but i see no benefit. Wow less clicks. big deal.
The real issue is to get the cost down of windows and keep it down. The middle class is shrinking and who can afford to keep upgrading?

Then the USA is facing crumbling infrastructure. The USA had lead the world in communications for ordinary folk and the USA needs optical fiber into the home else it will become a 3rd world hell.
I wonder if they hired some dummies from apple to make this UI mess?

😵, this UI is no good because it accomplishes the goals of a UI, to accomplish the goal with less clicks? I can understand not wanting to switch UI, but that's not a very good reason.

Cry and moan about win8/Metro all that you want, but at least get your facts straight. Win8 has had a more successful life cycle than every other version of windows except for XP and 7, sure it was not exactly what they hoped for, but it was hardly a failure.
Simply put, you, sir, are wrong. Windows 8, by-and-large has failed. I could care less about your long drawn-out reason to try and defend Win8, life cycle and Ballmer. Since you don’t have high-level IT experience I suggest “users”, like yourself, google Windows 8 (success or failure). There are journalists who normally defend MS/Windows who now have thrown Windows8 to the wolves. There’s no question it has failed. I’m in the IT Trenches and everyday work with all MS Server and Windows O/S’s and in the big picture Windows 8 has lost so much credibility I wonder if they will ever recover. Win8 is so bad Microsoft had to rush Patches to address problems and user experience issues (that should have NEVER happened especially after the Vista debacle). And even then they couldn’t get the Patches to install correctly. And, on top of that if you don’t apply KB2919355 by a certain date you won’t be able to install Patches going forward. I can’t tell how potentially problematic that is from IT perspective. It’s so bad I’m currently working on an issue resulting from KB291355 as I write this that affects hundreds of our Desktop machines. Do I blame Ballmer? Yes. He was in charge at the time of release. Ultimately, it all falls on him. Bottom line, Ballmer (Microsoft) rushed it.

x1000 (there just isn't enough votes on your comment :)

The UI was a minor setback and MS is finally fixing this problem only to be greeted with that update error problem. Never, ever had a problem with Service Packs or Windows update in general. It wasn't until sometime last year there had been problems with updates so instead of doing automatic updates, i do them manually (though i still have it so the update center still notifies me of updates) and keep an eye on updates that are causing problems. Unless you have a backup of your OS i wouldn't even recommend to try installing that KB291355 update as the problems could be minor to drastic. It's generally has been a hassle trying to get that update installed and it's just easier and better to either install W7 the original W8 which somehow is still getting updates or Linux. Microsoft is making something simple hard to do and anyone should know that W8 has not been a success at all. That would imply that people like it and it got positive feedback & it has been anything but that. Windows 9 rides on everything being good which i won't even bother with unless i absolutely need it. I will most likely get a preview version that i will virtual it on my existing desktop to see how it functions. Some people do like W8 and that's fine.. but it hasn't been that big of a success and out of around 10 machines that i've seen running W8 about 7 of those had a start menu replacement. Even though that is not an accurate number, it certainly seems to me that most didn't like the start screen, hence the reason MS is going back to the start menu which i have yet to see happen.

Wow. Did you actually read your comment?? “Win8 has had a more successful life cycle than every other version of windows except for XP and 7…”
And you’re telling ME to get my facts straight? This proves you are an IT wannabe/newb. You contradict yourself comparing Windows 8 to the likes Win95/98/Me/Vista as you said so yourself, “except for XP and 7”. This means you are saying Win XP/7 has been very successful. Um, THEY ARE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL Windows O/S’s!! But if the premise of releasing a new O/S is because it’s technically better would that then mean Windows 8 should be superior to Win XP/7? The answer is, Yes it should. But based on YOUR comment you are saying it’s not. You even go on to throw Win8 under the bus ”…it was not exactly what they hoped for…”. YOU THINK?!! It seems with your lack of IT knowledge you don’t have YOUR facts straight. If Windows 8 is not superior to WinXP/7 then technically speaking (no pun) in the big picture is it a failure.
