Question Windows Clean install impossible due to Random BSOD and restarts during the process.

Hello, I am seeking help. :ouimaitre:

I have bought a prebuild very strong pc in January 2024 for my work as self employed Video maker.
I set it up and chose to implement things from my Microsoft account and old PC setup. I think that lead to several small weird things and also rare bsod's.

It was fine, since a month the issues have been stacking up, more BSOD and all Editing and game Software crashing randomly. And since 2 Days I can't start windows anymore at all.
I had Raid installed and removed it myself (dumb I know), this gave the pc the rest i think. But it was strongly faulty before.

td;lr
Now my pc is so F*** up i can't even clean install windows anymore.
When I do it, the computer either restarts directly or after the keyboard language selection or i get a variety of BSOD that are related to different components in my PC.

So i don't know what to do anymore. What could I do?

Things I already did but the issue stays exactly the same:
Tried different USB sticks and installation processes many many times. Used basically every usb slot I have. (Bios usb 2 first ofc)
Unplugged everything and put it back, swapping Ram and my 3x nvme ssd's. Tried to boot with only as few things possible.
All 3 ssd nvme in different slots and together or alone. Cleared them with diskpart, list disk, clean.
Deleted Raid configuration and made new ones. (Somehow I have barely any Raid settings in my bios)
Update Bios.
Change and changed back all settings in Bios that seem related.
Reset Bios

I don't know what to do anymore, also used the handbook and chatgpt. And I need my PC to edit.

Thanks for any help!

If it's crashing during Windows installation repeatedly, my first guess would be a ram or SSD issue, though the processor or motherboard could be at fault too. It sounds like you already tried swapping out the ram between slots and also only with one dimm installed, etc.

Based on the specs I am going to go ahead and guess this isn't your first and only computer; is there any way you can test the USB Windows install with another computer (of course make sure anything needing backups is backed up first)?

That could at least rule out the possibility the USB stick is busted and rule out the possibility it is the installer or the usb stick itself. That is probably where I would start.

Sorry you are going through such a hassle with it.

Hello, thanks for your help!

Yes i swapped the ram slots and sticks and also booted with them interchanged while just using 1.
SSD's I have 3 of them, i think it has to do with the raid somehow.

Your guess is correct, i have an older machine on which my last created windows boot system, with the windows media creation tool, actually works just fine.

I also noticed all other options work fine, when I choose repair instead of reinstall windows.
While in my new PC that also leads to problems.

So the last stick used can't be the issue.

I would say to do a test with only the main disk (disable the rest of the hard disks)
Hello thanks!
I repeated this step also with all 3 of the disks and the problem persists. The only thing which changed, is that the resolution of the screen is different or it breaks earlier or later. But at the latest always after selection of "yes I want a clean install. " When the process starts.

It feels like the reinstallation doesn't have permission and due to that it gets restartet. But I have no idea.

EDIT: DPC Watchdog sth BSOD on the second try with the third stick alone and all others disconnected. I stopped googling the BSOD because it always changes I had so many different ones.

If you download the iso file to do usb you have a limited time to install, if it has expired you have to download it again
If you reinstall, I would say to leave only the master, do not connect other disks

I use the windows 11 media creation tool, that makes it on a USB stick. It's not an iso i think. I made a new one today in the late afternoon. And it worked on the other pc. I didn't know that but wouldn't it say sth instead of just restart or bsod?

Ok i just use the master. Is there anything i should do about the raid? Do i need to do raid again or leave it out or ist there anything else I can do with it? Cuz even when I just do the Media Creation tool and then try restall directly after it also doesn't work.

Download the last iso of microsoft and make usb with Rufus
You will connect all the disks one by one later if everything goes well, to see if anyone has a problem

This motherboard?

https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/..._WS_W680-ACE_UM_WEB.pdf?model=Pro WS W680-ACE

[Do verify that I linked the applicable User Manual.]

Re-read and review the entire User Manual being sure to read all fine print, caveats, warnings, etc..

Uninstall, disconnect, and remove all but the basic components as suggested by @triplex1.

Double check all connectionns, cards, RAM, jumpers, and case connections to ensure that all are fully and firmly in place. Clean out dust and debris.

Double check all configuration settings. Look for any conflicts with respect to expansion slots and M.2 (reference Pages 1-7 and 1-8).

Did you use only the cables that came with the PSU?

I am simply asking for what YOU saw as stating "limited time".

Using an old ISO does not, AFAIK, prevent actual installation.

So....link, or screencap of what you're referring to.
Just so that we're all on the same page.
You have 24 hours once downloaded the iso. Here the text in german:

Die Links sind ab Erstellung 24 Stunden gültig.

Ablauf der Links: 2024-10-27T23:24:06.107006Z UTC

This just means that the link is only valid for 24 hours.
NOT that you must install on your system within 24 hours.

Yes exactly this motherboard. I have the physical User Manual.

It came prebuild together. So I assume yes with the correct cables. It's very good with cable management and everything. It's from PC Specialist.

I already doublechecked, the stuff and I can't start the computer with the integrated Graphics-card I need to plug in my GPU everytime.

I will do it again with the manual this time though.

EDIT: I really think it has to do with the RAID. But it's just a hunch

Alright I unplugged everything and plugged it in again. Again no change. Sometimes bsod sometimes just the restarts.

I found out in the manual that i used the wrong slot for Ram stick when only using one. But it didn't really chance sth.

There wasnt much debris and dust. But I cleaned it with the airpressurecancleaning thingi spray.

All things were seemingly properly connected except an Audio Plug was not perfectly in. That might explained why my Audio Interface sometimes disconnected and I needed to plug it in and out again. In order to have it back working. But maybe also not.

Is it right that I don't have the SATA AHCI mode for configuring raid because the motherboard is to "new" for it to have sata?

New I have 0.5 seconds of this screen. I don't know if it tells me sth valuable. Maybe that secure boot is enable which it shouldn't when I want install windows. But also there is no option in uefi and also i read that secure boot today is not a problem when installing windows.

Problems still persists sadly. Nothing really changed.

Installing windows on the nvme on my other pc works just fine....

But if I put it in my new PC it's inaccessible BSOD.

I noticed the botting stick with the windows iso has 2 partitions on it but neither do work.

I am trying to format it cleanly on the other pc now and somehow remove the raid config on it. If it even is stored on the stick.

So I don't really know what to do now after that.

In the Asus pro WS w680 ACE IPMI Manual under irst it says I have to refer to the bios of the motherboard for actual settings.

I literally have the Asus pro WS w680 ace ipmi. What.

Something curious I found too.

under IRST with VMD on(or off for that matter) it shows exactly how many and where my drives are connected.
Under NVME Configuration, it doesn't show any drives. Also not if I start CMD through Repair function and use "list disk" there is no disk there.

In CMD of the old pc, I could all "clean" them in CMD.

Now I also updated BIOS to the second newest. Since newest is only in beta. I keep stumbling over a supposed " "raid menu" which is outside of BIOS but I can't find it.

I forced the insall with the old Interface so many times. And suddenly it worked.

My Ccomputer is booting again!!!!!

But it still has crashes on wepages often and I had 1 BSOD so far.

So I am not out of the blue. But I made Progress.

What helped was probably that I put the same Raid configuration as before in Bios.

But I still lack the access to the Raid menu I just have 1 Interface where I can choose to put what raid and what drive in. Not wheter I want to enable or disable it.

Welp.

I am further in my issue but not through yet. Also I don't know what caused the issues....
