My laptop (HP Pavilion dv6) started showing problems. The laptop stopped turning on. I tried many fixes but it would only get into windows in safe mode. Every time i tried to run windows normally it would crash at startup. I decided to go with a clean Windows installation, wiped everything and installed a fresh windows 8. The first driver I install is always the display driver because i just cannot look at the 1024x768 display that the microsoft display driver gives. I tried installing the display driver and everytime the laptop would crash and turn off. I tried multiple version of the driver (since its an old laptop), but no luck. The laptop runs just fine without the GPU driver installed. But this also reduces the perfomance.
Edit: The GPU driver installation is never successful. It always crashes while its installing.
Anyways, I decided to open up the laptop fully, cleaned it from the inside out, reapplied thermal paste and turned it back on. The only difference that made was that it got me lower CPU temps. Now i still can't install the driver, the laptop crashes each time. I tried many fixes, tried to mess around in the windows registry to get a custom resolution but still, no luck. Now, simple 720p videos on VLC lag, display is all blurry and weird and I just can't let this perfectly working laptop go :/
Now I decided to write here hoping the tech gods would know how i can work around this and get a better display. I don't play games on this laptop, I just do office work and I'm very very used to this.
Things I've tried:
1- Messing with registry to get custom resolutions (didnt work)
2- Messing with registry to bypass the error (didnt work)
3- Boot in Safe mode to install GPU driver (works, but when i boot in normal mode it crashes each time, gives the same error and loop goes on until i boot again in safe mode, uninstall gpu driver and boot up again)
This is the Blue Screen error i get:
Video_tdr_failure atikmpag.sys
