Whenever I go into the "Virus and threat protection" in the windows defender, it tells me, "No active antivirus provider. Your device is vulnerable." How do I fix this?

Solution
Get the free version of kaspersky , i run free and paid for versions on different machines , the free version only has a few bits missing compared to the paid version.

Also get malwarebytes .

When you have another anti virus installed , go to the virus and protection tab and at bottom in blue ink you will see defender options hover mouse pointer over those words and you will see a blue arrow. click it to turn defender off . I only run defender once a week i dont keep it running in the back ground.
What Windows version are you running, I presume 10 but you never know. Windows up-date and go into "Windows Security", my Win 10 is in German so I hope the translation is correct.... then on the righthand side is "Activate Microsoft Defender Firewall" and you will get sent to a Microsoft page that will tell you what to do.

Hope this helps.

I've heard that antivirus can make the computer slow? Is it true?

McAfee is terrible, all slow the PC down , some more than others. If all you do is Youtube and general safe surfing Windows anti-virus is all you need. If you are going on the Dark web then you need something more :ROFLMAO:Use Malwarebytes with it and you will be fine.

In the past maybe, McAfee has been pretty damn good for a while now. As have many other AV. It still hold a bad name (and it's password manager isn't great), but performance and security wise, nothing wrong with it nowadays.

Generally if people are unsure, there is no reason why not to just stick with Windows Defender, it's just as good with security, just doesn't have all the added features which in all fairness, a lot of people don't need.

Defender comes with windows.
You may need to select an option to activate it.
It is one of the best in detecting known viruses.
It is low impact, free, and automatically updated.

There are other more proactive(and impactful) anti virus apps that try to detect new "in the wild" viruses that have not been seen before.

Most viruses enter via social engineering.
Unless you frequent suspect porn sites or click on email links, you are quite safe with defender.
