I logged on this morning (like i always do) and i had installed avast last night and uninstalled AVG so i never got around to doing a scan. im also downloading malwarebytes at the moment. pushing that aside for a moment. i logged on and i see "desktop defender" down on my tool bar which i have NEVER seen there before. it was asking for updates. just wondering if this is real or not. im installing malwarebytes and running a avast! scan at the moment to see just what it is since i don't see it in my programs list (disk clean).

heres a picture. i wasn't sure which ling to use so i used both.

Defender is the old name for MS anti-virus / anti-spyware program. It's now MS Security Essentials. You should be able to uninstall form Add/Remove programs and install the new one if you want.

Where did you download AVAST from, their Web Site, or some other ?
Desktop Defender might be a game or some malware. Does it say "Desktop Defender 2010" ? - Sometimes when you d/l you get more than expected if not from the Vendor's site. I would be suspicious of your latest acquisition.

i downloaded avast! and malewarebytes all from this forum: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/239851-49-simple-free-guide-removing-malware

ive had desktop defender 2010 and 2011 before which are indeed a virus or maleware, but i do not have those.

what i meant to say was "windows defender", but since ive had desktop defender twice i accidentally put "desktop" rather then "windows".

also i posted a picture about it which would have cleared this up.
