If I left/right click desktop/docs/etcs underneath This PC, windows explorer locks up and crashes. I can interact normally with the other copies of those icons. Fresh install of Windows 10 Pro.
OS - Windows 10 Pro
SSD - Samsung 850 EVO (up to date firmware)
Mobo - ASUS Maximus VIII Formula (up to date BIOS)
http://prntscr.com/byvfbd red = crash blue = no crash

Solution
I have the same SSD, start up varies as it also relies on having right drivers and might improve once win 10 has been installed for a while. Win 7 used to load straight to desktop on this PC in about 15 seconds, but as I had a problem with auto logon I now have to enter password and that slows it down a bit.

Spybot must have been trying to scan the folders every time you opened them. I use Ublock Origin on chrome and between it and chrome blocking sites I never get malware on my PC. Use Bitdefender to block everything else.

Hm I am doing that scan now, but now it seems to not be crashing when I click on them. Very strange. I had this once before, then it went back to crashing.

No problems found using SFC

is this a fresh install or an upgrade from a previous version? You might want to consider a fresh install if it was an upgrade.

Another option is a reset but like a fresh install, you would still need to reinstall all your applications afterwards.

I assume you also have up to date drivers for the Asus as well?

I must have been tired when i asked about fresh install, you say it in first post :)

try this: open a command prompt with admin rights
copy/paste this in: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and press enter

if it comes back with an error cannot find source files then you will need a copy of the ISO you installed win 10 from (can just dl media creation tool and make one if need be)
mount that ISO in File explorer (see http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3579-iso-img-file-mount-unmount-windows-10-a.html)

and then copy paste the command below into command prompt (Admin) - change the X to the drive letter assigned to ISO

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /source:WIM:X:\Sources\Install.wim:1 /LimitAccess

Where "X" is the drive letter where the ISO is located. Simply change the "X" to the correct drive letter

DISM is an over powered version of SFC, it fixes the image that windows uses to fix itself. When you installed win 10 it placed a compressed copy of itself on the PC and if you ever did a reset, it would use that image to reinstall win 10. Here is where I got command from: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows_10-update/system-file-check-sfc-scan-and-repair-system-files/bc609315-da1f-4775-812c-695b60477a93

Since SFC didn't find anything, its always a good idea to run the first DISM command to make sure. It may not help but I am trying to figure out what would.

Something strange with your PC and I can't find anything like it elsewhere.

it only happens with the icons in file explorer under This PC? can you highlight This PC? if so, might want to run error checking on all your drives. (right click drive, select properties/tools/error checking)

No errors were found on any drives. It's possible it's happening other places, but so far in two days of use I have only found it to crash on those. Left clicking is fine most of the time, but it almost always crashes on those icons when I right click.

Try making a local user and see if same behaviour happens when you right click library folders. It makes no sense that user would be corrupt right after fresh install but maybe

It makes no sense that right clicking Documents, for instance, under This PC crashes explorer, and yet you can right click Documents under Quick Access and it works fine. They are the same folders? What is your problem Win 10

I saw spybot search and destroy listed in that link and I realized I have that installed from Ninite. I uninstalled it using geek uninstaller, and my boot time was actually a bit snappier too (on my last windows 10 install on this SSD, I would see the "now waiting" circle animation < 1 time on the welcome screen, whereas before removing it, it would go 3 - 5 times on this install. Now its < 1 time). Anyways, right clicking doesn't seem to be crashing any more.

I'll give it a day or two before I decide it's solved, but seems like it.

I was kind of hoping it'd fix the one other "issue" I have since my re-install, is that when in chrome I go to select a file to upload or something to a site, there's a second or two pause between clicking upload and having the file list pop up. It was instant on the last install. Not a big issue by any means, but something I noticed. Anyways, apparently not related to spy bot. I might just even be imagining it, at any rate.

thx
