I´m having an issue in Windows 7 that I´ve never encountered before, and I´m unsure what the problem is exactly.
For a while my machine wouldn´t update by itself (Windows Update would stay stuck on "checking for updates"), so I installed the necessary updates with an external program from wsusoffline.net. It went great, I could install the updates and got Windows Update working again.
However since installing all updates Windows Explorer lags and frequently crashes. It lags when I right click on anything, and freezes when I attempt to right click on anything while attempting to perform other tasks such as the installation of a Steam game.
This afternoon I went to get some food around the corner and left the PC running. When I came back the screen had switched off (even though power settings are set not to switch it off), and when I clicked to wake it up, the screen was white (wallpaper and icons were missing), but the taskbar was still showing.
I cliked a couple of times again and the screen came back alive but with pieces (rectangles) "missing" (still white). It resolved itself after a couple of seconds. I checked graphics driver software, but it´s up to date. I ran a memory test, it came out fine. I checked the drive for errors, nothing wrong.
The event viewer consistently puts out "Schannel 36887, fatal alert 40" but I´m unsure if this is related. When I google the alert, I get results from 2014, back when an update was released that turned out to be problematic for a lot of people. However the update in question doesn´t seem to be installed.
