...because a critical system driver is missing, or corrupt.

Ever since I tried installing the Windows 7 upgrade, I get this error. The upgrade failed upon multiple attempts and now, upon restart, Vista won't boot. It won't even boot from the installation CD. It takes me right back to the Boot Manager screen and the failure message pops right back up.
The Windows 7 upgrade CD will boot, but it won't upgrade and I can't do a clean install. I tried to format the hard drive through this screen, but it either didn't work or it did, but my computer keeps sending me to the Boot Manager screen with the failure message.
What's going on?
(By the way, I've gone through the F8 options one-by-one. None of them work; they all send me to the same failure screen.)
