Windows fails to update??

I had to update my windows 7, and once it said it was done, it said configuring windows please wait. I waited for about 6 hours and then it switched to something along the lines of configuring windows update failed, reverting back, do not turn off computer" This sat for a whole 2 days. I finally then had to turn it off and try to restore from a restore point and let that sit for another two days and still nothing happened!! I can go into safe mode but obviously i cannot do a windows update in that. I am lost at what to do!

open command prompt as administrator and type "sfc /scannow"
