Installed the Windows Recovery Console today. Now when I boot it gives
me the choice to boot either into Windows XP or the Recovery Console.
Tried the Console just for kicks and guess what? It appears that
you're in good old fashion DOS for purposes of "command line" type
operations. So it appears to me that even this latest version of
Windows is just another add-on to a DOS mode. Interesting ....

Stephen

Recovery console has to work from outside of the Windows environment.. I
fail to see why you consider that to be a victory for DOS, or why you
consider that XP is a shell running on DOS a la Win9x because of it.. it is
no different from having a car go wrong and having to alight to fix it..

Hi

You may think it is a DOS-mode add-on. However, the RC commands are listed
here:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmb_tol_pzsk.asp

Although some options have to be set within the Windows Shell to be able to
access **all** of the RC commands!!

Which (eg) options, and for what commands?

I was hoping that the RC mode WAS a DOS mode.

Up 'till now, if I wanted to operate in a DOS mode, I'd have to boot
from a DOS system disk ....

Hi

If you have XP installed onto a FAT32 hard disk/partition, you can boot into
'DOS' with a Win 9x floppy startup disk. However, that is not possible with
an NTFS hard disk/partition. How to access the other commands is documented
on the MS web site, but is a security risk - I've no idea why it has been
documented!!

Didn't say or mean anything about "a victory for DOS", (whatever that
might be). I'm not even much of an expert on these matters.

Adding the Console to XP revealed a new starting screen much in
appearance as to what I would consider DOS like, from which either the
Console or XP start.
