Hi guys,
I have DSL via a LAN hooked up to a router and when I came home from work today I booted up and noticed that my internet connection did not work. I could not even visit my router's internal software. I checked the cable and router and everything appeared alright, but I noticed something very strange when I was looking at my network status in the windows xp 'network connections' control panel. It appears that for some reason my computer keeps trying to connect me through the gateway 127.0.0.1 instead of the 192.168.0.1 it is supposed to. Through that gateway it keeps telling me I am assigned a strange IP I have never seen before, 169.254.220.240.

I bypassed this by manually entering my network IP with the router as the gateway and the router's DNS data. However it still shows me the 127.0.0.1 and if I have my settings back to normal it does nothing but say I'm connected to the strange IP. I tried to fix this by system restoring to a day ago but I guess this weird thing was still in effect and since I cut back my restore memory so much I can't restore back any further. I tried reinstalling my network card and it had no effect and I cannot uninstall tcp/ip which is what I'm guessing is messed up. I really have no idea what caused this, I haven't installed a program or anything in the past few days. If any of you have some insight into what is making windows say I'm connected to this IP (always the same one) instead of the network IP it is supposed to please help me!

My guess is the router settings got changed. The router assigns you an IP, not your XP machine.

Some day I'll be rich and famous for inventing a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet.

a 169.254 ip is issued if a dhcp controller is not available. sounds like your router is playing up

Thanks a lot guys! I went into my router settings and the DHCP server had been disabled. I enabled it and upon reboot it has worked correctly. Under network settings it now says IP assigned by DHCP server instead of 'Private Obtained' like it did before.
