Hello all, the other day I noticed in device manager for Windows 8.1 that my Nvidia GT740M graphics card had the yellow caution symbol located next to it. Once I went into the details of the warning, this message was presented to me:

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

I have already tried uninstalling the device and scanning for hardware changes, as well as trying to use the nvidia driver installer software to reinstall drivers, which said it could not find the device (after uninstalling it from device manager). The device is clearly not functioning as if I try to run games such as counter strike, where I used to get 110fps I now get 20fps as I am now forced to run on the integrated Intel HD 4000 Graphics. I would really appreciate help with this as it's super frustrating not being able to use the laptop for any graphically intensive applications. Thank you for your help as always :)

Specs:

Lenovo Ideapad Z500
Intel core i5-3350P 3.1 Ghz
6GB RAM
Intel HD Graphics 4000
Nvidia GT740M
1TB HDD

"The device is clearly not functioning..." If Windows says it's not functioning and the device driver install program can't find it there is probably something wrong with the hardware.

If you are handy with tools and have the correct ones you could disassemble the machine, disconnect, and reconnect the graphics card (essentially unseating and re-seating the card) to see if the drivers will install.

Second. uninstall it and rest your drivers and BIOS while it's not installed. The shutdown, re-install it, and see if Windows finds it to install the drivers.

If you're not handy with tools or the above doesn't correct the problem you'll need to take it to a shop. If it's a hardware failure all the twiddling of drivers and software in the world isn't going to accomplish anything.

Hello, I have done some further troubleshooting on this problem and have found some new information. Firstly, installing the Nvidia drivers directly from Lenovo's website appears to show a successful installation, but when the PC restart is attempted, the computer encounters a DPC Watchdog Violation BSOD or simply sits on a black screen. However, in safe mode, the PC starts and operates perfectly well and the GT740M shows up as working properly in device manager. So now my issue is resolving the BSOD more than anything else, is there anything I can do to resolve this? Going to do some further reading also to try and resolve the issue myself. Thank you for the suggestion to install the driver directly from Lenovo as it has helped me progress with the issue. Cheers.

It's certainly improved the situation yes and I'm no longer convinced the device has stopped functioning, I'll see what unfolds in the next few days of experimenting and tell you the outcome, thanks again. If you've got any suggestions about the BSOD, please feel free to suggest :)

Hi,

I am also using GT 740M on Asus K451LB. I've tried tons of methods, including reinstalling drivers, updating BIOS and stuffs, but none of them work. I've also tried the hotfix 364.96 but doesn't work as well. Hope it can be fixed soon.

Couldn't agree more, it's a stupid error and I'm lucky I have a gaming PC to game on and not my laptop. Used to only have the laptop which was my primary gaming machine and now it can barely achieve 25fps on CS:GO...
