windows on new pc

I just built a new pc and I have Windows on a usb and I can boot to it, but when I type in the product key it says it doesn't work. The product key should work because it's brand new, do I need to be connected to the internet or anything? I don't know what else to try.

What do you mean, specifically, by "it doesn't work" ?
What error does it give you?

Which version of windows are you trying to install? the Full Retail or the less expensive "upgrade" version. If it's the latter then it won't work because it doesn't detect a previous version of windows installed.
