I was trying to download a free app from the Microsoft Store, I kept seeing the error that Windows Update is disabled. I also tried to start it using cmd and got an error stating that "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it"

I don't even know how this even happened... Thanks in advance for the help

Solution
weird I had the same thing happen today. Try run servcies.msc and change windows update to startup automatically apply then click start service see if that works. If that doesnt work then I would start disabling everything in startup that you dont need with msconfig then click services in msconfig hide all microsoft services and start turning the ones off you dont need. I ended up having some program installed that disabled system updates that someone else installed to keep the pc from changing due to a specific software i needed to run that had issues with windows update. Windows also has a built in tool to troubleshoot windows update issues. Could also be virus related as they dont like you updating anything that might threaten it.

What specific Windows version is this, and where did it come from?

What free app were you trying to download?

What cmd did you use/try to start what service?

Are you able to get screenshot of the "Something went wrong...." message?
I was trying to download Netflix but won't go through cuz of the Win Update being disabled. I tried to run NET START WUAUSERV in cmd.

here's the screenshot

After some googling about, I found a link that stated that the computer should be disconnected from the internet before launching that command.

Hopefully someone will be able to verify that requirement.

In the meantime look at the following link:

https://www.coretechnologies.com/blog/windows-services/windows-update/

Use the link to check your current configuration but do not change anything.

Just post what you find.

I tried the first suggestion but didn't work, I still got the same error as before.

I followed the article and found that the Win Update config is disabled and not on Manual as the article says.

It's weird cuz I remembered updating my window and drivers...

Okay, I did the command and it replaced corrupted files found and restarted my PC as per article instruction.

I reopened Setting to check if Win Update has been enabled, it still isn't working. Checked the Win Update config but it's still disabled.

Ahh I see, I should've done that lol but didn't have any idea at all and what would happen if I did and I'm not really risking in changing something that might may make matters worse. I just decided to reset my pc while keeping my files and installer but losing all my apps, but hey it worked! After the reset I checked if windows update was up- it was and made the required updates it needed.

Anyway, thanks for the tip. I'll keep this in mind in case I run into the same problem again next time I will not be resetting my pc
