Yesterday(7/25/2024) I had a statewide ZOOM call 3-4p.m.. Everything was fine until, after the call. Then I did a Windows Update and several things happened in succession:

1. Even though I can watch videos, I no longer have audio. I have the SoundBlaster Audigy 5/Rx.

2. I checked my 'Settings'. Both the soundcard, and the software for the soundcard, are correct. When I play a video from either CNN, or YouTube. The sound is very faint. Even though I have the volume set at 50%.

3. Then I started getting a 'CRITICAL SETTINGS'(it was in all caps) error, when clicking on 'START', followed by it only allowing me to sign out.

4. Because of the problem with 'START', I cannot access the 'File Explorer'. I use ' File Explorer', instead of the desktop to run most programs, to keep the desktop from looking like a junkyard, and to cut down on RAM used.

5. I have 8GB RAM(2X4GB). I have 32GB RAM(2X16GB) that I want to upgrade the RAM to. But not until the sound n' 'START' problems are solved.

Any ideas?

Look in Windows Update History - any failed or problem updates listed?

Any error codes, warnings, or informational events in Reliability History/Monitor? Especially any after ending the call or after the update?

Try running "dism" and "sfc /scannow" to find and fix corrupted file problems.

https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-use-sfc-scannow-to-repair-windows-system-files-2626161

Post accordingly.
I have a feeling the update did not fully install the first time. Because, The audio is back now. Thanks for the response.(y)
