Regarding Windows Update, I can click to update Windows and it does 2-3 times a day which shows in history.
However, If I do not click on update, it does not show that any updates have occurred in history.
I have tried everything in Google including a recovery of an image, DISM following SFC, services.msc for Windows update.
I did not know how to attend to intelligent service however. I have been told services says it should be set to manual which it is. It showed that way on the system recovery too.

Is there anything different than what Google has to offer to help my Windows update to run automatically.

This shows the message I get after I have been manually updating and run the trouble shooter. I then went to services dot MSC and under Windows Update it had stopped, and it was manual bits was the same it was manual and stopped I changed them both to automatic and running should I just leave it with what the troubleshooter says are my modifications alright?

i guess answer will be if any new updates show in history. That you didn't click yourself.
I was told by a mod in another forum and read about how to determine that it should be manual.
I am not highly skilled so have a hard time recalling.
Automatic makes sense to me but that is where I was confused -logic vs advice and reading.
So kerboros if I leave it at manual it will still update, I will hope that is the case.
Thank you both.

unless it says that updates are managed by your organisation or no other errors pops up, then all is working as intended

running windows update too often has been said to give you updates that might not work well. I just leave it and windows will update when its ready to. Sometimes getting them early can have negative effects as they have been known to be buggy.

I understand and will wait a few days to see if it updates automatically and and will not bother with it again.
I always thought it would be good to get security patches in the machine sooner than later. With Windows it is an issue a day so I will just leave it alone as log as it functions.
Thanks

I don't think history will show an entry every time windows auto scans for updates.
Unless there is an out of band update you would normally see an entry around the 2nd of the month.

I'm glad you told me. When I manually updated it recorded in history. I thought auto would be the same.
I'll leave it alone for a awhile. Thank you.

On my main system, or any of the Windows VM installs, I check for new updates once in a while. Every couple of days, maybe.
There is generally at least a Security update.

On my wifes system, that gets checked basically never.

All systems get the same updates. Whether you look and check or not.

Leave it be, and it will do its thing when it gets around to it.

True.
Windows updates and defender updates are 2 different areas.
The op is talking about clicking on the windows update button.
I never paid attention if that button also looked for a defender update.
It does.
This system, just now:

But if I didn't check, it would do it anyway, when it got around to it.

I repaired Windows only. Bits was manual stopped and Windows update was manual running.
Those are the default settings. To a non skilled user it does not make sense but that is a fresh installation of Windows.
I have MBAM free with Windows.

for bits u should have some entries in eventviewer under system, event id 7040
The start type of the Background Intelligent Transfer Service service was changed from demand start to auto start.

It seems your post n contradicts itself. Please let me know If I am wrong.
I still do not understand how a new installation of Windows is corrected or fixed by the windows update trouble shooter.
