Windows Vista 64 does not recognize my new ASUS R9 270 Video Card!

The driver disk that came with the card and the ASUS website do not have Vista drivers for this card. I went to AMD.COM and found a driver that says it is designed for Vista 64 and this card. It is "13-12_winvista_64...exe".

I physically installed the card and the Device Manager only sees a 'Standard VGA Graphics Adapter'. (I am using the video card now to write this post.)

I have tried installing, removing, and re-installing the AMD Catalyst driver. (I even installed the Microsoft.NET as a precaution.) Still no go!

Any ideas?


I will re-boot and check in Bios. I previously had a HD4850 in the slot and upgraded to the R9 270. I do not understand why the Catalyst software recognized the R9 270 but the Device Manager sees only VGA.

I tend to use NVidia and the GeForce experience, but if you try downloading the AMD Catalyst Control Suite it should automatically assign you a driver update. If it doesn't work from there then there must be an issue.

unfortunately i think you are going to find that the new card has no vista drivers and so is going to install to your system as a generic vga graphics adapter.personally i would be more inclined to upgrade to win7 than mess with any workaround on this one,if there even is one.one last hail mary on this would be to try to install the win7 drivers for your card and see if that works as win7 drivers are very similar to vista.

I am having the same issue with my 270x. Did you figure this out? I keep hitting dead ends. Last fix I tried was to manually update but it didn't help.

I RMA'd mine. Two days of troubleshooting is too much for me. Having NO support from Sapphire kind of pushed me to RMA. Good job though.. didn't try this one yet, but I was having an issue installing the Catalyst Converter which was something new as a problem, which compounded my frustration.

Short end of the stick: shouldn't be this hard. Going with NVIDIA next time.

has anybody read the first post? there is no vista driver for this card so it is only going to be recognized as a generic vga.upgrade to win7 and you will have a driver.not to say it wont work as vista will install its own generic driver as well.

I read the first post. Don't understand what your asking, but the AMD website says the 13.12 driver WORKS for Vista OS 64bit. However, mine seemed to not recognize it, and his too for the Vista OS.

If you read what we're saying we don't disagree with that's what it says. When we applied the driver to our OS it failed to work however. Two different things.

just spent a whole day trying to solve this problem. i have vista 32 bit + r9 270 (not 270x) and installed the latest driver from amd site 13.12. wouldn't install. saw a thread where someone altered the inf fil but the latest drivers don't follow the same convention. however the method is similar. i got it working eventually.

what you need to do is this: uninstall all the amd drivers and software completely (do this in programs and features in control panel)

now reset computer and install the 13.12 driver but choose custom install. leave everything ticked and allow to complete installation. when you have clicked finish it will probably not come up with the 'you need to reset your system to ....' thats fine.

go into device manager in control panel, find the display adapter.
it will probably still be standard vga.
right click on it and update the driver.
select 'browse my computer'.
select 'let me pick from a list...' theres a button near the bottom that says 'have disk' click on this.
click browse and find the folder where the 13.12 driver installed to (normally default is c:/amd/support/13-12_winvista_dd_ccc_whql/packages/drivers/display/lh_inf)
find the file CL165822.inf and click ok.
you should now have a list of models in the window.
scroll up or down till you find the r9 270. click next.
it will probably say that the driver is unsigned/unsafe etc, just carry on and install.
you will be prompted to restart the system when it finishes installing.
et voila you should have a working system.

if the audio hdmi driver doesnt install and you have a mystery multimedia device in device manager then follow the steps above for updating the device but point it to the WDM/HDMI/LH folder and the filename is AtihdLH3.inf.
