Does Windows Xp Professional offer better performance than Home? Does it perform better in games?

The only real difference between home and pro is that pro will support 2 or more cpu's right out of the box,whereas home requires a service pack.Pro also has an added feature or two the home does not.Otherwise they are exactly the same.

All the service packs are is the Windows Update patches piled into a nice package , more than likely if you have latest patches on your machine and install SP3 (when it comes) the only thing that will change on your machine is in the system properties it will say SP3 not SP2 like it used to.

In short: Yes it will be compatible.

Vista seems too buggy right now, XP pro supports up to 64bit if you have a system that supports that. ie more then 4gig of RAM. Wait and get vista later when people stop having so many issues.

ah the great debate about home vs pro.

Main differences - Domain Support (user management aswell) and language support, and yes the 2+ physical cpu support (not dual core, two physical sockets and processors) - the rest is the same, same windows core, same stability, same down falls, same performance - what anyone else says (eg stability, etc) is a load of BS.

pfffttt windows xp had the same "buggy" appearance when it came out, untill everyone accepted it.

XP Pro and XP Pro 64 bit are two different products

Per Microsoft about SP3:

SP3 should be sometime in the 1st half of 08 (Home and Pro), while Vista gets SP1 in the 1st quarter.


To the main topic:

I have used and troubleshot both Home and Pro and have found Pro to be more stable and easier to clean up when someone goes to myspace and clicks all the banner ads. I'm just starting with Vista on a laptop I just bought, but so far I haven't run into any issues. (Vista Home Premium)

I have not noticed a performance difference between the two XP's except stability. (From my experience)

On a side note: From what i saw on the M$ website the "Mainstream" support for Home and Pro are ending at the same time for XP, when in the past the buisness versions got an extra year or 2.

Performance advantage of Professional...not really but they are designed to cater huge networks. As far as I know more than 10 workstations while home edition is limited to 10 more than that it will reduce its networking bandwidth.

As to stability they are the same.

I can't believe no one has responded to this one yet in that last 2 years but three things here are very false. 😱 You won't lost half your performance as not all 64-bit code runs 2x and even most 64-bit software don't take advantage of the extra features all the time. In the XP Pro x64 days, it would sometimes even be slower.

Win XP Pro doesn't support 64-bit features on AMD64 processors; you're thinking of XP Pro 64.

Only the XP Pro x64 edition utilizes the added 64-bit extensions of AMD64, XP 64-bit edition is for Itanium only (very uncommon CPU & discontinued) while other remaining XP Pro editions are 32-bit
