when i try to shut down my windows xp computer the dialog box that pops up asking if you want to shut down, restart etc... takes at least 2 to 5 minutes to show up and the entire computer freezes throughout that time. How can i fix that?

I'm not sure why this happens. Did you shutdown your PC abruptly (holding power button, power switch etc.) while the HDD light was on? If so, you might have corrupted some files.

Here is a command that might help you:

Open Command Prompt and type (without the quotes) "chkdsk C: /f". Then, after confirming the check on next startup, restart your PC. Wait for the check to finish. Also, if there are any "deleting/fixing corrupt file/removing orphaned inode" messages, please take note of them and post them.

Hope this helps,
Bajiru

Yes, you will be able to do so, just remember to execute the command in the Command Prompt before shutting down your PC! :D

run that command and it work, it took a really really long time to do (about 1.5 hours). everything seems to be good not "deleting/fixing corrupt file/removing orphaned inode messages" for me

that didn't seem to fix the issue but it has helped. it still freezes but for a shorter period of time. actually it seems that after closing a window the machine freezes for a short period of time also, this was happening before also. i wonder if its because that there a network share drives still setup on the machine that are for a different network that are no where near my network?

It might be accessing the network drives in order to send a shutdown command. I'm not 100% sure though...

P.S. I'm sorry I did not reply in time.

i removed the network drives and it's still doing the same thing. At this point i'm thinking i either just suck it up and deal with it or reformat

I think that formatting and reinstalling Windows is your only option. There might be some corrupt system files which are unfixable. Also, your system32 folder might be damaged. If your PC is generally slow, this might be the cause. Also, consider trying to install Windows 7 after formatting rather than XP. You will be safer and have the latest updates from Microsoft until January 2020. I know, this does not sound like much time, however this is your only choice since Windows 8+ requires NX which is not present on most PCs that came with Windows XP.
