Windows xp pci 1394 card setup

Hello,

I can't seem to get my brand new firewire 1394 card made by PPA Int'l to work. My old firewire PCI card was fried and so I got a new one. Can anyone walk me through the steps internally in the comp. to get the card to recognize my external HD and also my Digidesign Pro Tools 002 unit to work.

Nobody is going to email you anything. You'll have to come back here for results of your questions.

You failed to say if Windows has accepted your new 1394 card and reports it is working properly.

Plug the new card in, Start computer, Windows discovers new hardware and indicates it needs driver, Or, Windows will plug in it's own generic driver that will work perfectly.

You can check if Windows is happy with the new card by going to Conrol Panel and looking it up:
Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager
Look under Network Adapters to see if your new card is listed without a yellow exclamation mark in front of it.

If it is listed without a yellow exclamation mark, and no red "X" going through it, then it works.

Come back with that tidbit of information and we'll go on from there.

Hey,

I went through the start menu options that you sent me through and under network adapters it does show the 1394 Net Adapter, but there is no yellow ? mark next to it. The only yellow ? mark in the device manager is next to other devices-SM Bus Controller. Also, I reasearched the PCI card(PPA Int'l 4 Port 1394 Firewire PCI Card) and it stated that it didn't require a driver. The comp. that I'm using isn't connected to the interned so maybe that is why is stated that it doesn't need a driver???

PS: First off the external drive is not shown under my computer, but also when I try to load Pro Tools with my Digi 002 by firewire it gives me a message that might not mean anything but you seem so smart I thought you might be able to decipher it.
Microsoft.net Framework 2.0 (.86) I don't know if this might help but I'm trying to give you any information that might be able to help you. By the way I know your time is valuable so I'm extremely greatful that you're taking the time to help!!!

Also,

I don't know if it might help but my comp. is a Dell Dimension 4550. Also, does it matter what PCI card slot I put the card in or do they all read the same.

Good going, you found your card in device manager and it works.
You said I seem so smart... um... the operative word here is "seem". :pt1cable:
No, my time is not valuable, I give it away for free all the time.

Onward.. You have some sort of Framework error. This is bad... if you already have Framework installed,
good, if you don't. This is vital for so many programs these days.

If you don't have ".NET Framework" installed, you'll have to go get it from MS. It's here:

And Framework SP2:

These links are a bit long, so you may need to copy & paste them into your browser address bar, to copy, right-click and select "Copy link location", don't do a general drag-through and copy.

To see if you have .NET Framework installed, open Windows Explorer, copy & paste this in Explorer's address bar:

%systemroot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework

To determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed on your computer, follow these steps:

1. Open any one of the folders in the previous list.
2. Right-click the Mscorlib.dll file, and then click Properties.
3. Click the Version tab, and then note the file version.
4. Use the previous list to determine which version of the .NET Framework is installed on the computer, and then click OK.
Don't try to install an older version of Framework than the version you may already have.

If you don't have Framework installed, get it and install it, however, if you do have it installed, it may have flown south on you. If you did a CD Windows repair, it is gone, I'll let you know right now, so is Direct-X.

Not a problem, it can be repaired, just re-install it, and that goes for Direct-X also.
It will offer to do a repair, choose this.

Do all this and get back to me here.

BTW, the PPA Int'l 4 Port 1394 Firewire PCI Card is supported by Windows XP, and whether you are on the internet with it or not makes no difference.

The .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 provides cumulative roll-up updates for customer reported issues found after the release of the .NET Framework 2.0. In addition, this release provides performance improvements, and prerequisite feature support for the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1.

Please review the supported operating systems for this deployment package in the System Requirements section. The corresponding updates for Windows Vista and Microsoft Windows 2008 are deployed via the full .NET Framework 3.5 service pack 1.

PCI Slot you plugged into makes no difference, "Unless" your computer is old, and uses an AGP graphics card. The #1 PCI slot had a habit of taking the same hardware interrupt as the AGP card which was not all that bad, "If" the PCI card supported interrupt sharing. These machines now days don't have that problem.

Dell Dimension 4550... no, you are not cursed. This thing has a problem that can be worked out. It just takes a bit of time to go through a forum to get answers to questions, provide information, eliminate possibilities, make adjustments... etc.
