Funny to see that this thread is till alive. I doubt the original poster has stopped by in quite a long time. Pretty soon we'll need to change the thread title from "Windows8 vs Windows7 ...? to "Windows8 vs Windows10 ...?"

or 7 vs 10 if you never upgraded. 😛

Speaking of W10, what do you guys think so far?

@ Kademlia: Thanks for the links!

@ Roger Rogers: That's probably the most thorough documentation of troubleshooting I have ever read. Never fails to start with the basics and isolate as many variables as possible. Wizardry!
god there's so much ignorance here... windows 8 is way better, just get startisback dot com for it and you're golden
- 8 has hardware sound acceleration, 7 doesn't
- 8 uses TRIM instead of defragment for SSD's without any 3rd party software
- You can mount image files on 8 natively without any 3rd party software
- 8's Task manager is better and easier to overview if you need to find a process/task that's taking up the most of a particular resource...
- several games show better performance on windows 8 than 7, the only downside is you cannot switch off aero on 8, on 7 it can improve game performance a tiny bit because it frees up some 60 or so megabytes of videoram...
- 8 has faster boot times especially when paired with a UEFI bios
- you don't need to patch 8 for AMD FX processors like you need to do with 7
- 8 has better ram/resource management in general
- I'm sure there are many other things that i don't know about... i can't see a single reason to get win7 anymore...

nice try - i live on the other side of the planet..
and i think it's funny how i have migrated the same windows 8 installation through 3 different motherboards, 4 cpu's and recovered data from a failing harddrive, restored it up to a SSD even tho the windows was installed in a old system without sata AHCI mode support... and still haven't had a single crash... most reliable windows i have ever used...
google "windows 8 crash" and you'll encounter other people like you who don't know what they are doing so they come to internet and start spamming...

so fix your shitty i7 system because it's unstable...

At the end of the day the answer to that would be your preference. Both have good features to it, some more advanced than the others... so its really what you prefer over the other. An example would be the start menu, or the no start button on desktop. So yeah really, its mostly what you prefer, I personally have Windows 8 and I have no problem with it.

I would recommend windows 8 for touch tablets and laptops not PCs. windows 8 is faster than win 7 in booting and performance but some features are annoying for eg no start button (and to me, the metro screen and no transparency like win 7) but microsoft is a clever company and must have improved win 8 in order to sell it. some people like it and some dont, so it is dependent on you to answer the question ,'is windows 8 better or win 7'. Well people will ultimately have to move on and install the new OS. Final advice is that install windows 8 only if your system meets the OS's requirements.

the requirements might even be lower than those on win7... also all u need to do is get startisback.com and it becomes much less annoying, also removes charms, boots straight to desktop etc. etc. if you change that in the settings... and it is integrated into shell, doesn't run extra processes etc. so it's the best or one of the better ones out there...

I currently have windows 8.1 on my laptop, and the other 2 desktop PC. I find windows 8.1 very good and not really different from windows 7. It is also compatible with lots of programs. I don't see much difference between these 2 versions it is just the looks and maybe a couple of different features, it is all about your "taste"

Sorry but this is a no brainer. DO NOT get the trash called Windows 8. It is a glorified and horrified version of Windows 7. ... AND FOR THE RECORD 8.1 DOESNT FIX ALL THE CRAP THEY MESSED UP.

also, for the troll "yanis" in this listing, I have both laptops with 7 and 8 and was a Microsoft Beta Tester until they released the crap called Vista after my suggestions for corrections were ignored. To show your not totally stupid, yes, there are a couple of things which will be better when they actually work.
For the rest of us, we will stick to 7 until 8 actually works. For those who got stuck with a MicroCRAP Winblows 8 machine, get your system restore discs ready. You WILL use them over and over.

Because I got it for free.

I'd recommend buy windows 8 and upgrade to w8.1 Pro. It's awesome. Extremely fast on everything especially if you have SSD, if you don't like metro start there is pokki and you have your start button back. One thing i didn't like is that it doesn't have that safe mode we saw in win7, but anyways it's lightning fast and good. If you still haven't made up your mind, install it on vmware or see some videos on youtube, or download it and try and then buy it if you like it.

If you are gaming then I heard that Win 8 will give you 1-2 FPS boost. For work I recommend Win 7. This all is based of what computer you have, if you have a crappy one then dont bother upgrading. But all in all I think if you get used to Win 8 you will really like it :)

I am a full Windows 8 Buff, there really is nothing I don't like about windows 8 I am running windows 8 on all my machines, all the hate Windows 8 has received is honestly un warranted, the OS is faster, more secure, better for organization of programs and files, syncing is very good as I sync with my laptop and phone to my home PC/Server and have everything I need when I need it no more forgetting files or presentations (thanks to skydrive) I have been using windows 8 since the developer preview and it has only gotten better from there. WIN8 has been a solid positive step forward for Microsoft.

Windows 8 boots sooooo much faster than 7.
Many kernel improvements.
I don't know why 8.1 is really buggy with my directx games(Crysis 3 for example). I don't really like it.
I don't like what microsoft has been doing lately anyway..I hope 8.2/9 will be a good change.

Its very simple Kevin. Win8 is faster, probably better for organization, without a doubt better for synching with different devices like you said......But why am I being forced into such a huge change? I have been used to the way windows worked since Windows 2000, and im still being forced into some very annoying changes.

But If i want to keep playing the newest games, I will have to change to Windows 8

I despise the power that Microsoft has. I don't need any of the new Windows 8 stuff but I will still have my hand forced.

Windows 8.1 is great... it takes a few learning curves... but I expect with new updates they will add a start menu...
if you go to [control panel] and select [Default Programs] you can set everything to open up in desktop mode.

windows 8.1 also has a feature to boot to desktop.

where the start button is on the desktop. you simply right click and an admin menu called the x menu will drop down,
this will allow you to find anything you need.

I also recommend pinning File Explorer to taskbar and from there you can basically do everything you did on windows 7.
change has come and windows demands to change to windows 8. im no fool I choose the new and it works much faster imo.

you can select a number of laptops that are good for you and what you do.

I myself don't like touch screens so I would recommend these gaming laptops! (with cool cases)

CyberpowerPC Fangbook Hx6-110
Lenovo Ideapad Y510p
MSI gt70-Dragon edition 2
iBuyPower Valkyrie CZ-17 Notebook

if you don't need a gaming laptop and just watch videos in 720p and play flash games and facebook with a bit of ms office work:

HP ESSEN250
ASUS X501A-RH31
LENOVO Ieadpad G510
and many more!

btw I don't have the start is back or any 3rd party start menu and I have had no problems with my no touch windows 8.1 computers

I should go with Win8 cause it gets better all the time. For example Win8 is faster than Win7 (example my PC Boots under 5 seconds with Win8 and SSD) Only downside is that Win8 may can't handle some of the older games of softwares. But Windows 8 at this point!

On the topic of software compatibility: If Windows 7 could run it, Windows 8 can too.

Windows 7 much easier to run. windows 8 while more tools are cool but are not yet accustomed to hardship
