Hello all. I know enough about computers to build one (I just did), but don't know much at all of networking. I recently got DSL and read that I can get a firewall and link 2 of my computers together using a Linksys router, which I bought.

Well, after failing to get connected to my ISP after connecting the router I called Linksys tech support. They told me I had to get rid of the Winpoet that automatically installed when I set up the DSL. He told me to download Nuke Poet. Is this true? What is Winpoet? Is Nukepoet safe to use?

I am sorry if these are very newbie questions. I did a search of the boards on both winpoet and nuke poet and found neither. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Never heard of those sorry =\, but i've never used DSL just cable.

Nukepoet is a program that uninstalls WinPoet. Take a look <A HREF="http://www.dslreports.com/faq/earthlink/Software" target="_new">here</A> and <A HREF="http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/archive/16380.html" target="_new">here</A>.
Apparently RASPPPOE is the way to go.

Just to expand on Wiseguy, you can uninstall Winpoet from your add/remove programs applet in the control panel. Make sure you know your username and password. Then just go into the Linksys config screen and set up PPPOE with the same username and password. That should do it.

BTW - do you have Verizon DSL? Thats what I have. I've done the same thing as above and it works fine.

<i>It's always the one thing you never suspected.</i>

Thanks for all the great information. Those links were great. I do use Verizon as my DSL provider and am glad to hear this has worked for you. I am going to be giving it another try tonight after reading your comments and researching some on the Linksys website.

I set my folks LAN up and ran into the same problem... It was pretty simple.

Now only if I can get mine working... Grrr...

I got it up and running now. Thanks again for all your help. I deleted winpoet using add/remove programs and went ahead with the installation. The one note I would add to anyone using Verizon is to check you Microsoft Explorer internet options. Under connections, make sure never dial a connection is set. This caused the connection to the internet through the router to fail.

Thanks again all.
