wired internet connection

i have wired an ethernet cable to my smart tv but it will not connect. i have tried this cable out on my laptop and it works just fine but will not work on tv and even my playstaion. i have gone through settings for wired connection but still no joy. it says the ip address is incorrect. any help?

Since you say the cable won't work on the TV or the playstation doesn't it seem like the cable might be the problem? Is this a homemade cable or a commercial cable?

the same cable works on the laptop thou. It is a cat5e cable with rj45 plug on end and i have double checked connections. they have been run seperatly away from any electrical cables so i am seriously baffled.

It may be easy to test but when they are wired through the house it is not easy as router isn't near any of these devices. Why would it work on the laptop if there was a problem with cable??? Any why can I not connect the tv wireless? I would think there could be a problem with either the ports on the devices or a problem with line in. I have also tested the same cable on my home cinema which seems to work fine! I'm no expert but would have a guess that the cat5e cables I have run are not faulty.

The difference between commercially installed/purchased cables and ones you make yourself is commercial ones are almost always tested. It is very common for someone who does cables all the time to have a test meter called a TDR. This are way too expensive for most people to own. Unlike the cheap test unit they sell at the home improvement store these actually can measure the signal levels to insure they meet the standards for ethernet cable. These are the devices that are used to actually certify a connection actually meets the tia/eia standard for ethernet.

If we discount the possibility that you have 2 device with bad ethernet ports it is most likely a cable that is built good enough to run on some device but not on all. There are many possibilities but most are related to the wires making partial contact with the plugs on the ends. The simplest solution is to cut the ends off and keep trying until you get a good one. Without a TDR meter you are flying blind but it is way too expensive to buy.

Now if what you did was buy commercial patch cables already assembled and ran that through the wall it should work. I always tend to test cables like this run over the floor just to be sure I did not get a bad one before I put it in the wall. It is rare to find a bad commercially made patch but some manufactures do not test 100% of their cables.

As I recall recent network cards/switches can use straight and crossover cables and are able to adapt based on the networking configuration (see auto-MDIX ports). You might be using a crossover cable that your laptop manages to use with your switch, where your TV and Playstation cannot.
It is just a suggestion but it is easy to verify looking at the two RJ45 connectors and see if they are wired correctly (straight VS crossover)

You need both ends to be wired the same. You need to be sure they are either 568b or 568a color pattern on both ends.

You should have one of those configurations:

As I recall the standard for residential networking is the TIA/EIA 568A wiring.
What you want is the straight cable If you have the crossed wiring then you probably have identified the issue and need to rewire one end.
