Check post 6 for some new info on my problem.

Hey guys, I'm at my wits end here. I have no idea why this is happening but it started a few months back. I hadn't made any hardware changes around the time, but I found that my wireless xbox 360 controller would not work with the walking dead season 2 steam version, no matter what I did, I couldn't get it to work. I ended up just playing through with mouse and keyboard but then i bought another game; Lifeless Planet, and it wouldn't work either unless I first unplugged my wireless dongle and then re-plugged it back in.

Other games; for instance, Just Cause 2 and Fallout New Vegas (both steam versions) work right off the bat as long as the controller is turned on. Recently I upgraded my GPU to EVGA GTX 980 SC edition so I got a free game with a promotion. "The Crew" is the game that I got, and its doing the same thing. If I start it up, the controller is not recognized at all, and the only way to make it work is to turn off the controller, close the game, unplug the dongle, re-plug the dongle, turn on controller, start game.

The strange thing is that when it doesn't work for these games, before I go unplugging the dongle, I can still start other games and it works perfectly on those games, just not on these two specific games until I unplug the dongle.

The dongle is an official MS one, and to test that it wasn't the dongle itself, I had a friend bring his over and the same thing is happening. My thought is that it is some sort of different input file used in these games where the software is stopping or something.

Any help or advice to just point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Are you on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1? If you're on Windows 7 have you tried installing the Wireless XBox360 Controller Driver? Also is your version of Windows an N version (without media center)? If so you may need to download the update for Windows N versions.

Hey Lmah sorry for lack of specifics. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I have installed the driver from the disc I got with the receiver, and I have re-installed it from the official MS driver download page but I'm still having the issue. It's so strange, when I turn the controller on and sign into Uplay to play The Crew, a little notification comes up at the bottom left saying "controller connected" but when I press A to start the game, nothing happens...until I unplug and replug the dongle.

I just shut down my computer and unplugged my Logitech receiver for my kb+mouse and my USB hub to make sure they weren't interfering with anything. When the computer came back on I started the crew up and hit A and it started up with controller support. I then shut the game off and turned off the controller and then turned it back on and tried lifeless planet and it wasn't recognized. I shut off lifeless planet and started the crew again and this time Uplay didn't even recognize that a controller was connected. After all this, I started up Fallout: NV and controller works perfectly. I am so confused.

Is this problem specific to Ubisoft games or does it happen in any other developers games? It sounds like UPlay could be having some device priority issues.

Another suggestion is try closing programs/services you're not using, eg... Samsung Magician (if you have it or similar), mouse software (eg razer's program), I would also check your services and make sure the 360 controller service is running, I forgot the specific name and I can't really check since I'm at work.

Well, it also happens with Lifeless Planet which is an indie game developed by a very small studio (one man I think).

So far, these are the only two games it happens with, not a huge deal really, I'm just concerned that it will happen with other games in the future. I went through my services and disabled my USB hub and both USB wireless keyboards/mice that I use and it still didn't fix it. This just seems like such a specific and strange problem.

I have been doing some troubleshooting with this and here is what I'm getting. If I re-install my MS Controller driver, or restart my computer and then turn my controller on, joy.cpl shows microsoft wireless receiver and the controller works with all games. Now when I turn the controller off and then back on, joy.cpl doesn't see it anymore until I restart computer or re-install driver. All the while, any game with native controller support like New Vegas or Skyrim works just fine. What could be happening here guys?

Thanks.

I have exactly the same issue. It does this with FC4, XPadder and Real Head Motion program i use for Assetto Corsa.
It only works on the first connection, if i remove the battery pack and reconnect, it fails to be detected as a Windows Game Controller in Control Panel Gamepad settings. And wont work in the programs i have mentioned until i reboot.

Ive tried the latest driver and uninstalling and deleting this driver to fall back to the 2009 driver from Windows Update.

8GB RAM
P8Z77I Deluxe
Logitech MK520

Ofiicial Xbox Wireless 360 Adaptor and Controller conncted to rear USB 2.0 port.

Just connected my receiver to my other PC, and it has no problems with detecting the pad correctly after unplugging the pad battery and reconnecting.

Rig is
3960x
Rampage Gene IV
16gb ram
Win 7 SP1 Ultimate x64
USB keyboard and mouse

It must be some sort of software we have installed causing it to be problomatic.
Why do i forsee a reformat =(

YES! I actually just ordered another wireless receiver because this problem was annoying me so bad. Just for the heck of it, I decided to check this post again and when I saw your response I thought "hey...I use fanaleds too..." so I disabled it like you said, now my controller works every time. Guess I'll have an extra receiver anyways. THANK YOU!
