wireless apartments

I brought my laptop to my girlfriends apartment and plugged in my wireless PC card hoping a neighbor may have (free) internet for us, when i boot up, the card will find a wireless AP or router system but there is no internet connection, so im wondering what else i should try to get free broadband(unless its a dial up router)
