I recently setup a new ASUS RT-AC68U (wireless ac) router in my house. It broadcasts great everywhere except the back corner of my basement where I want to move a few wifi enabled devices. I still have my older Linksys E3000 (wireless n) router and was thinking of flashing it with DD-WRT and using it as a repeater to extend the coverage. What I don't understand is whether this setup will essentially turn my ASUS RT-AC68U into a wireless n router. i.e. If I link a wireless n repeater to a wireless ac router, will I loose the wireless ac connectivity ability for the devices near the RT-AC68U? I understand the E3000 will not provide ac capability.

I would recommend you run the repeater on 2.4g only since that only runs 802.11n anyway and the 2.4g signal has better coverage to start with.

The router will still run 802.11ac even with the repeater running 802.11n on 5g. The most significant issue will be all the interference the repeater is generating by increasing the traffic. When you run repeaters you obviously lose the 50% to the device on the far end but the interfernece generated also has a affect on the device directly connecting to the router. The unfortunate part is if you happen to be closer to the repeater and get stronger signal it will attempt to connect to the repeater which can do 802.11n even though a weaker signal running 802.11ac from the main router may be better.

Thank you! That makes sense. If I may ask a follow-up question, is there a better solution than a repeater?
