Wireless printers won't work with windows 7

i just bought 3 new laptop computers, 2 hp's and one toshiba, all with windows 7. i set up a wireless network using a netgear wnb2000 router. then i got a canon pixma 560 printer, and when that didnt work an hp c4795 printer. now the hp printers wont work. after spending 6 hours on the phone with hp support, they say its a windows 7 firewall issue that won't let my computers speak to the printer via the router. has anyone had this problem, and more importantly, does anyone know of a solution? thanks

I don't have this issue with Win7 and my Brother wireless laser printer. To me it seems more like whatever antivirus software you have running. When I switched from Symantec End Point Protection to Microsoft Security Essentials I could no longer press the scan button on my printer in order to scan files to my computer, I had to initiate the scan from the computer, but this method worked fine.

No problem using a Wireless printer here. I'm sure the Windows firewall won't affect this. It's possible that the firewall on the router would, if configured very restrivtively, but I doubt it.

One thing that has helped me in the past is to set the printer IP address as static. I was really frustrated when netgear would re-assign my printer address and I would have to reset the settings on each PC.

Oh yeah, don't rely on HP support for anything. Google will be much more of a help and will not blame a product that they claim they support such as windows

Agreed with the previous poster... using a static IP for your printers is best. Every time you turn the printer off and on again, there is always a chance it will get a different IP if you're using DHCP. My favorite addy to use is 192.168.x.50.

i just wanted to say thank you all for your replies. they are helpful. i actually had a canon mp560 and returned it b/c it wasn't working. i get the feelilng that the problem is my router. one guy at hp said that b/c my ip address starts with "10" instead of something like 189 or 192, the printer couldn't communicate with it. not quite sure how to reset the ip address on the router and all my computers, but it sounds like this is the next step. thanks again to all.

actually, i did have one follow up question to pose. one hp guy i spoke with said my avg 9.0 free download security softward, or even possibly my free ad-aware software could be blocking the communication. any thoughts? thanks again

It could be, easy enough to test. Just disable the software temporarily or stop the service all together if it has an associated service.

It really doesn't matter what your IP address starts with... as you can configure the printer for any IP to match your local network. While the most common is 192.168.x.x, it is by no means the only valid set of IP addresses out there.

thanks zoron. i really think its a router issue. maybe there's a firewall in the router blocking the communication. i will ask netgear about this.

set a static IP for your wireless printer, for example, 192.168.1.199. mask:255.255.255.0. then set the ip for your pc as 192.168.1.200, mask:255.255.255.0. disable the firewall on your computer. ping 192.168.1.199 from your pc, see if your can get any reply.

I have the same problem.......Brother MFC465CN works fine wirelessly with my old ACER (windows XP Pro) have new HP with windows 7 and the printer will only print with USB plugged in. What a pain.

I have the MP 990 & had issues until I figured it out.
You need to download the driver from Canon's web site.
When you run the install file it will give you an option of a network printer, use that option, otherwise Win 7 will never find the printer.
It took me about 2 days to figure it out.
