I've never used one with a transformer so I don't know if that will affect the powerline data signal. When you try it, please let me know if you have any problems.
Yes, that netgear router will work fine as an access point. Simply connect it LAN port to LAN port to the main router using the powerline adapters. Then in the netgear turn off DHCP and give the netgear a static address that is in the network range but outside the main router DHCP assignment range. I like to use a different SSID but the same password so that I can select which radio my devices connect with.
