Ive actually got a similar question so rather than making another thread I'll just tag it along on this one. Ive been considering changing my network in my house to a wireless one. Im concerned about the speed across the network. Im not very concerned about file transfers between computers as much as I am about my internet connection. Ive got 5 computers hooked into my router which is then fed into my cable modem. Everyone here plays FPS games (HL,Unreal, etc) and surf the web constantly. That includes downloading and uploading files from the internet.

My question to the educated/expirenced folk:

Would I likely expirence a slight drop in performance by switching to a wireless network with my current setup? Would a wireless network be able to keep up to all of the computers internet demands simultaniously? (It wouldn't require going thru more than one or two walls/floors :)

THG rocks, thanks for the great reply on my last thread. ;p

The chances of you getting a client to associate to an AP at 100 feet through 4 walls is pretty much nil. Certainly with the budget SOHO variety AP. If you do it would be very weak, probably in the 1 Mb range if your really lucky.

The answer to the general question is that wireless will add in the 1-5 Ms range for pings when the client to AP association is solid, meaning the signal quality or SNR is good.
