I am trying to wire my xbox to ethernet and am not sure how. I noticed that I have an ethernet plug in my room and bought a cat6 cable to link up my xbox to the plug, but it doesn't plug into the wall. I only have one router in my house and it is downstairs, so I can't plug it into the router. I have been reading and realized that I probably bought the wrong cable and that I should have bought a straight cable. I am just wondering how to plug the Xbox into the wall (if thats even possible) so I can use ethernet instead of the wifi I currently use. Thank you.

Are you saying that your Ethernet cable does not fit into the plug in the wall? If so, the plug in the wall is probably a phone jack (RJ-11) and not an Ethernet jack (RJ-45).

If it is impossible to run an Ethernet cable from downstairs to upstairs, you might want to read about powerline networking.

When you say the Cat6 doesn't plug into the wall, does it physically not fit into the plug that is in the wall? Is the plug too small? If it is then it is not ethernet but a phone jack.

If you did have ethernet wired in your house you would have a place somewhere where a bunch of LAN cables (Cat5 or Cat6) come together that you can plug into a router or a network switch.
