You can, I did, but it's really not worth bothering with .. most of the
interesting items (and all the skills, spells etc.) vanish on the way.

You can, yes.

So you can take a team from 5-8.

Worth doing, I think, as there are some things in 8 that are
'unlocked' with items/characters from the earlier games, plus a new
intro.

I'm pretty sure that doesn't work in the Ultimate Wizardry Archives
version. :)

Yeah, and you can keep those 'fairy ninja' character which are (or used
to be) a PITA to roll. But ISTR that Wiz8 made it easier to roll up
off-the-wall characters anyway.

>Did they fix the infamous "Bishop Identify #9" cheat too?

According to this web site http://www.tk421.net/wizardry/wiz1walk.shtml they
did:

Your bishop is the key to the biggest cheats in the game. Instead of
identifying items 1-8, try some other keys to obtain near immortality:

Identify 9: The bishop gains 100,000,000 exp
Identify J: The player below the bishop gains 100,000,000 gold
Identify S: The player below the bishop gains 100,000,000 exp

However, this trick does not work in all versions! In the Wizardry Archives, it
does not.

I never used these spells, but thought about it a lot.

Actually a few good items do come through. IIRC the Elven Bow and a couple
of high-end rings, including the Diamond Ring, made the transition in my
game. There is a very nice reward if you engage in the right conversation
tree with Bela and offer to return the Diamond Ring to him.

In Wizardry 8 there are a few items that you can't get any other
way than transfering in characters.
