WOL after power failure

Hi all..

When there's a power fail I can't start my pc in WOL but i've to start it manually..

i read this

Some machines do not support Wake-on-LAN after they have been disconnected from power (e.g., when power is restored after a power failure). Use of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) will give protection against a short period without power, although the battery will discharge during a prolonged power cut. If a machine that is not designed to support Wake-on-LAN is left powered down after power failure, it may be possible to set the BIOS to start it up automatically on restoration of power, so that it is never left in an unresponsive state. A typical BIOS setting is AC back function which may be on, off, or memory. On is the correct setting in this case; memory, which restores the machine to the state it was in when power was lost, may leave a machine which was hibernating in an unwakeable state.

what can i do?
i discovered the wol connector on the mobo isn't connected with the network card.. could connect that solve the problem?

is it a mobo (asus cuv4xe-100) or a network card problem?

Check your BIOS settings for a WOL enable feature. I think it might have reset your BIOS settings.

no.. i mean that the WOL doesn't work (only) after a power failure... when the power comes back the network card doesn't get back ready to be waked...

i've to go and start manually...

WOL is a 'Sleep State' wake {S1~S3} and Power Outage is a {S5} Off status. In your BIOS look for a "Restore A/Con Power Loss" -> {Last State or Power On}.

Either should work, if using a separate NIC Card then verify that the WOL {magic packets} are indeed {Enabled} in the OS. I don't know what you mean by "wol connector"? The only connection is the cable 'RJ-45'.

If your BIOS has WOL then it'll have the Restore A/C on Power Loss settings. Personally, if this is a server then I don't allow them to ever go to 'sleep'.

Yes, that's the whole point of that setting; essentially it restarts the PC. Test it and "pull the plug". Clearly, I won't repeat the necessity for an UPS.

It's not a "problem." That is the way it works. WOL requires that power be kept on to the system. As mentioned, you can work around this by changing another BIOS setting to cause your PC to boot when power returns. Then you can shut it down if you don't want it up and running.

As you discovered, when you set it up for WOL and power is lost, it will not WOL.

I 'get' what you want - Off when you say 'Off' then the best solution is an UPS. A properly configured UPS will place the 'PC' in Hibernation mode prior to the power being fully drained and restart the 'PC' once power is restored. WITHOUT the necessity of the 'Restore A/C on Power Loss' settings.

You are treating the 'PC' as a 'Server' but are frustrated when it acts like a 'Server' -- if the 'PC' is remote then:
" i set to previous state.. and if i shut down the pc it restart by itselves.."
is EXACTLY what you need!

how can it reach the "off" (previous) state if when i shut it down it restarts

S0~S4 are what the BIOS is referring to in "previous state" though S5 {Off} is indeed a state to reach that state in 'your' BIOS you need to {Disable} the 'Restore A/C on Power Loss' setting. OR get an UPS.

I assume the original 'problem' of "When there's a power fail I can't start my pc in WOL but i've to start it manually." is solved.
