hello,
Am trying to assemble a pc for my kids with some old parts i had lying around.
i have a gigabyte g42m combo.
installed is a core 2 duo e8400 775
i bought some 2nd hand sticks of ram off the internet, they are 2x4gb ddr2 samsung pc2-5300p (M392T5160QJA-CE6)
they look rather short in height for ram sticks, but have been working with ddr3/4 for ages.
the psu has 20+4 pin which plugs in fine, the cpu power is 4+4 pin, and the board only requires 4 pin, only one of these plugs fit.
i have the board outside the case, plug it all in, start it up, get a 5-10 second wait, then short continuious beeps.
manual says "power issue" but i am unsure.
removed all sticks of ram and get 9 long beeps.
i have tried reseating cpu, reattach hsf.
tried one stick of ram in the first slot closest to cpu, tried it with both sticks.
finally reset cmos. no change.
Bad ram or bad psu? have read elsewhere beep codes tend to be a bit unreliable.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

have you tried running it with another PSU?
what PSU do you have?

I do have my own rig with a 1000watt psu......got the cable management down pat......hoping not to pull it apart if I don't have too.

that ram is ecc server ram. so likely it wont work in that motherboard.

This kinda makes sense, the board has been laying around, jezzz I hope I don't have to go to a specialty shop to get a batt.
Had NO IDEA there was such a thing as server ram, I thought ram was ram. As long as my cpu supported 667mhz ddr2 it would work.

the battery is a normal CR2032

is it the g41m combo?
this also supports ddr3 memory. You could get e.g. DDR3 1333MHz unbuffered 1.5V 2x4GB
if you are using a 32bit operating system use just 2x2GB

Yea that's the board.
It supports ddr3 but only 4gb total 2x2gb. 1333mhz would require xmp, which I doubt the board even supports it so ancient.
Gonna be throwing on 64bit Windows 10.
Sucks though because ddr3 is heaps cheaper for some strange reason.

why do you think that just 2x2GB ddr3 are supported? the homepage of this board says up to 8GB ddr3

It is what the manual said, and spec page I think.

just the tested RAM is listed, the manual says 4GB other than the homepage 8GB though.
I think the homepage is more up to date than the manual and 8GB are supported.

should work with these, update the BIOS before and reset BIOS/clear cmos afterwards
