Woo Hoo for IBM

i lashed out and got me self a IBM 40 Gig GXP60
for only $325 australian! (most sell em her for $330-$350)
a nice 2 platter job to complement/replace my old 16.8GXP (methinks)

That 60GXP is one damn sweet drive
when i first plugged it in and turned it on i thought it wasnt on it was so quiet. And now, even when its running ful speed with lots of head seeking i can barely hear it over the ambient noise of the powersupply hum, not at all when the other drive or CD is running, and can only feel slight vibrations if i put my figner directly on it

only problem is my archaic GA-686BLX mobo and award 4.5 bois
the bios is so old it has a bug that makes it lockup detecting drives over 33.8G

but that was fixed with a visit to ibm's hompage. after some rootin around i found a nice bios workaround called disk manager.
oh, and the mobo is only ata-33 too
im not worried, its still much faster than the old, and a new mobo is im my sights soon anyhow
. o O (wonder if i can find an AXIA - Y around town)
must run. time for a clean win98 install folks

Just a heads up, DDO's ( dynamic drive overlays) can get damaged quite easily. You would be must better off with a promise ata66/100 controller that would detect the drive at its full capacity and let you run in ata 100 mode. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need an ata 100 controller the ata66 controller will work just as well.

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing!

It has very high pitch sound, it is little higher that the GXP75 has, I have both, 30 and 40 gigers, the access sound is little less than 30 (15x2) has. Not comparable to Maxtor ATA66, 30 gig though, I could not even hear it working when I put my ear on it, nothing, nada, zilch, that is what I would like to have in IBM drives, but it is impossible, they spin too quickly )

But as far as usability, my 40 gig one is a little quicker in respond than the 45 was on W2k box. So enjoy… heh

bloody piece o' [-peep-] motherboard
tried the drive overlay...
tried a bios update
multiple configs... different ways of formatting
but still cant get my monster 40 gig to boot as a windows drive
it just cracks the sad
it gets detected ok (still as a 33.8), bios update didnt fix that strangely enough, but just wont boot
nor can i use norton disk doctor on it, get the blue screen of death
or hdtach for that matter
but i can copy stuff to and from it nicely as a backup drive
thats using both 32k (default) 8k and 4k clusters
ie thats 32768 * 1256000 clusters = 40 gig
or 8192 * 5024000
or 4096 * 10048000

oh well.
new mobo time soon
i can live with my old 16.8 as the boot drive for a few more weeks
