there is no need to bump your post after not even an hour. remember, we do this on our free time for enjoyment not as a paid job so it may take some time to get an answer.

Thanks for your reply.
I am very sorry to have done the second post but it was not to get attention or to try to rush an answer. When I clicked on the link to Monoprice which I had placed in the first post it did not work to give me the page I wanted. I changed that link in the second post and thought I was editing, not posting anew. My apologies. In fact, for reasons I still do not understand neither link is what I wanted it to be. I wanted to reference a powered 3D-capable HDMI splitter, Monoprice product ID#8154. I copied the URL of the Monoprice page I wanted to link to and pasted it into the posts in each case. BOTH links, when I try them now do go to Monoprice but not to the page I wished for.

if the onkyo unit is within warranty the best option would be to have them fix the problem.
--------------
I don't think it is under warranty still. But I don't particularly like that option. The problem is apparently very common and I am thinking it would be faster, easier, and probably cheaper to find a workaround. I have read reviews complaining about the hassle with that option.

are the only devices in question the cable box, onkyo receiver and tv?
-------------
The Onkyo receiver is part of an HT system, HT-R590. After a month or so I first noticed that while the SAT/CAB input for HDMI on the receiver was set to 'pass through', nevertheless, when the receiver was off, occasionally when trying to turn on only the cable box and TV one got video on the HDTV (Mitsubishi WD-82740) but no sound. This seemed to self-correct for no apparent reason after turning things on and off or trying resetting of the function on the receiver. This pattern continued and seemed to get more frequent. Recently, I don't seem to be able to get the sound to pass through at all. No fiddling with any settings or turning on or off seems to produce the audio on pass through. At all times if the receiver is turned on and set to SAT/CAB input then one gets TV video and audio thru the speakers of the receiver, even TV audio in this case (that can be muted). So it all works acceptably when I want higher quality audio through the receiver. But watching news on TV would be OK for me with lesser quality (TV speaker) sound and fewer hassles of turning the receive on. It would also I believe save wear on the use of the receiver. A BD player which is part of the system is not set up to pass through when the receiver is off. That is the only other device in the system and works with no apparent problems. Only the HDMI pass through function, supposed to work with the receiver in standby (off) mode, and only involving audio signals, seems to be erratic or unstable. The AUTO pass through settings available on the receiver do not seem to prevent the problem or work properly either.

what outputs are on the tv (ie, do you have spdif optical out for audio)
what inputs are on the onkyo (ie, do you have spdif input)
---------------------
Yes. Both. There is no ARC function with the TV. Receiver has it. I would like to be able to get HD audio and it is my understanding that optical or coaxial spdif doesn't carry it. Which is why I prefer to feed HDMI signals from both cable box and BD player through the receiver which is capable of decoding for example Dolby TrueHD or of using decoded HD audio signals from the BD player.
---------
if you have spdif on both you could run hdmi to the tv then spdif to the onkyo.
-----------
I have had it set up that way but could tell on the receiver that it was not getting the best quality audio signals available thru the spdif functions. There IS an audio-monitor-out connection on the TV and Mitsubishi says it is the only connection one needs to an AV receiver. But that is by coaxial cable and one can't get HD audio that way either, right? On some 3D BDs one may have for example Dolby TrueHD. One cannot get that thru spdif, right?
------------
if you have spdif only on the onkyo you could have a box splitting off sound to spdif and the video passthrough via hdmi to the tv.
i'm not sure how hdcp works into the equation.
of course there are other options available such as using component video/audio but since you are using hdmi this is likely not what you want.
----------
That is correct.

again, the first thing to do would be to question onkyo about the issue instead of a workaround approach.
