Glad I could help :).
No, you would not have invalidated any warranty, as even the motherboard does the same thing to switch on your power supply . The retailer would have checked the same way. It's not relevant. No need to mention.
Do you prefer any other site from which you can order the psu? Ccl don't have much choice.

I am happy to take your recommendations on psu supplier though uk only please.

Update: just spoke to retailer and they seem confident the problem lies with the PSU. I didn't mention that I've tried the paperclip trick so my next stupid question is,

just because the paperclip trick worked, does this mean the psu is indeed fine?

I ask only because they will charge me £50 to take a look at the rest of the PC, money which I'd rather put towards other things!

£50? Isn't that too much?
Now this matter I can't say anything cuz even if the psu works, it might have taken the pc with it when it sparked. What I suggest is use another psu to test, a friends or take it to work and test it there, better save the cash. Or try some other store.
If the pc is fine, yay! I've suggested 2 psus in my above post the 1st one is very good as well the 2nd but a little unnecessary.
Aria.com.uk is a great site with pretty cheap rates.

Guys, thank you all so much for all your help, I really appreciate it.

Let me tell you whats happened...

Just before I set off to the retailer yesterday, I had a friend of mine take a quick look at my machine. He noticed some errors I had made when wiring up the motherboard to the tower... Hmmm and I thought I had followed the manual to the letter!?

Anyway, he altered a few connections and then hey presto, the computer came back to life!

I found this very strange because I had been using the computer for the last week and a half with no problems, so why it ever worked in the first place is a mystery?

I do feel so silly now but on the plus side, I have learnt about the importance of a good quality PSU and shall be replacing my cheap one within the next week.

Thank you all once again for your input, you guys are what makes this the best forum out there.

I do hope you won't lose patience with me as I'll surely be back again with more silly questions in the near future!

Thank you.

Oh great! Congratulations!

I've suggested A psu in my posts. It's an xfx 550w. Great psu!
And you are supposed to select a best answer!
