Worst case scenario laptop overheating, what to expect?

Hi folks. So I had a (joking but not entirely) traumatic experience with my gaming laptop. It's an MSI from 2016. I had put it into sleep mode, packed it into my tight fitting, zippered bag and took it with me to another location. It was in the bag for about 40 minutes and when I started taking it out of the bag I immediately felt it was extremely hot to the touch and I heard the fans just blowing hot air into the case with no where to go.. It turns out it had crashed in sleep mode and was overheating.

What symptoms should I expect and should I be prepared to replace it? So far I have noticed no problems and I am writing this post on said laptop.

I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy!

Thanks!

Pcs will shut themselves off before getting too hot to damage itself.

Thanks! I had thought it would shut down before damaging itself but I wasn’t sure if the crash negated that feature. This has happened before, crashing in sleep mode and then heating up just not in a case. So I feel like this could have been prevented if I shut the machine down instead of using sleep mode.
