So om building a new gaming PC soon and wondering is IT really worth getting that SSD (thinking of a 400/500gb one) to have the OS and some games on.
Is it worth it or not?
Is it really that much faster?

Boot time is under 20 seconds

Games like WoW and GW2 have a significant increased in load times between zones. Other than that there is not benefit.

However the effect on games is fairly limited. Even with all my games stored on my HDD, I am nearly always the first person to load into any map or server.

SSD gives great boot speed... but if it an ssd or a much better gpu as i frequently see people asking, I'd take the better gpu over an SSD anyday.

Short Answer:

O/S Boots Faster, Game Maps Load a bit faster, Programs launch faster

FPS in games don't increase.. Once a game is loaded and you're playing... it's pretty much the same as if you had a regular HDD.

If you have a ton of games, not worth it to install on an SSD.. because it's cheaper to use less expensive HDD.

IDEAL SETUP: O/S on SSD, Games installed onto secondary HDD

SSD is notably faster, though how often you will notice it depends on usage. Boot time, program load time, ssd to ssd file copy, etc.

For cost effectiveness, I'd recommend a dual-drive setup: a 120GB SSD boot drive and big drive for steam games, etc.

If you have the money to spend OR don't need lots of space, just a ssd could do the job.
