I recently built a new computer with a single TB hardrive. Recently, it's been sitting at 995 at times when it probably shouldn't and my PC has been requiring me to restart it quite often because it freezes quite often. Could the disk usage be causing this? Would an extra drive help this?
Would a disk being at 99% usage cause my PC to freeze if it's my only drive?

yes it would. Try running your anti-virus and malwarebytes to make sure nothing else is going on. It is possible if this is a new build your OS is updating and until its all up to date you'll have high loads on you hard drive.
It could also be due to one of the new windows updates. Depends really on what uses said disk to that 100%
If symptoms fit, trying the first temporary "until I boot the computer" solution first wont harm you.
