I actually own one of these and run window son it with 16GB of RAM, works well. The onboard RAID controller will support 4 drives in RAID. Should work pretty well for a samba/file server.

Would it be worth it to get hot swap 5.25 to 3.5 adapters and more RAM over buying a higher end server?
Do you need more than 4 3.5in drives?
For just files/holding backups 4gb is probably sufficient it uses DDR3 ECC UDIMM so you could pick up more rather inexpensively.
If I wanted to host game servers or run VM games, would the server be powerful enough to handle it?
I suppose it would depend on the game. id recommend getting more ram for sure.
I run a MC server in a VM on mine(all windows though) and it runs fine. Though i never have more than 3-4 people on at any given time but im confident it could handle more.
