Would doing this ruin WiFi performance?

Would buying a good router with gigabit ethernet and a good 802.11ac WAP be better or worse than just buying a good router with fast ethernet speeds and 802.11ac?

Your WIFI speeds might be better or worse depending on the location of the AP compared to where the WIFI router would be.

The UniFi APs are very good devices.

Depends on what yuo want to do. It won't provide any faster internet than the connection you have. It may give you better access to hi def video that is on a local server.
